Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust for an Estates Project Management Apprentice. The role(s) will be based across the Trust estate which includes Oxford Road Campus, North Manchester General Hospital and Wythenshawe, Withington, Trafford and Altrincham (WTWA) sites.
Adapting and refurbishing buildings is essential for delivering the optimum care environment for both patients and staff and in enabling the NHS to utilise the latest medical technologies and techniques to care for patients. Estates Project Managers are an essential part of the NHS and form the vital link between the successful delivery of construction projects and favourable patient outcomes. The precise details of any of the apprenticeship are dependent on a number of factors that may be subject to change at various stages of the training and qualifications already obtained, however, the information below will provide an overview of the envisaged training requirements of the apprenticeship.

The post holder will support the Deputy Director of Estates Development in ensuring that the Directorate both creates and supports a caring environment through the delivery of an effective Estates service at best value for money across all the MFT estate.
Following established procedures, the postholder will work under the direction of the Senior Capital Projects Manager and supervision of the Project Manager/ Assistant Project Manager.
Main Duties include:
S Support the Project Team with the design and specification of refurbishment projects and construction solutions in accordance with the project brief and relevant guidance, across clinical and non-clinical areas;
· Use of Auto-Cad to update existing designs and drawings;
· The undertaking of site inspections for the purpose of space suitability, occupancy, measurement, progress and refurbishment, under the supervision of the Project Manager;
· Support the Project Team with the competitive tendering of works in accordance with Trust guidance and ethical standards;
· Assist the Project Team with the monitoring of contractors and works on site;
· Meeting staff on site to gather project brief information under the supervision of the Project Manager;
· Partaking in stakeholders’ meetings and compiling accurate meeting minutes; and
· Maintaining accurate project records, including cost and contract information and undertaking general project administration tasks.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Observe and assist the Project Manager and Assistant Project Manager with the following duties to meet the framework training requirements:
· Support the Project Team with the design and specification of refurbishment projects and construction solutions in accordance with the project brief and relevant guidance, across clinical and non-clinical areas;
· Use of Auto-Cad to update existing designs and drawings;
· The undertaking of site inspections for the purpose of space suitability, occupancy, measurement, progress and refurbishment, under the supervision of the Project Manager;
· Support the Project Team with the competitive tendering of works in accordance with Trust guidance and ethical standards;
· Assist the Project Team with the monitoring of contractors and works on site;
· Meeting staff on site to gather project brief information under the supervision of the Project Manager;
· Partaking in stakeholders’ meetings and compiling accurate meeting minutes; and
· Maintaining accurate project records, including cost and contract information and undertaking general project administration tasks.
2. Provide support to qualified staff in the provision of a professional robust estates project management/design service across properties within the MFT remit
3. The Post holder may be expected to work on placements with the Trusts partnering Project management consultants to enhance their experience and support their ongoing professional development.
4. The Post holder will be expected to attend the training provider’s establishment as part of the apprentice training on a part time, day, or block release basis and to ensure that all deadlines for the submitting of work, portfolios, assignments are delivered on time.
5. The Post holder will be required to become suitably knowledgeable in all aspects of the taught apprenticeship.
6. To undertake all training and education required as part of the apprenticeship.
7. To carry out continued project management/design work under the supervision of a competent Project Manager, until such time that qualification allows unsupervised work.
8. Using knowledge acquired during training to develop the skills necessary to define the project brief, design an appropriate construction solution, appoint a suitable contractor, and manage the contractor on site until completion and handover.
9. Support with the provision of an estates project management/design service primarily undertaking scheme investigations on behalf of individual departments, minor works recharge requests and varying construction projects within the remit of estates.
10. Once suitably qualified and experienced, the postholder will plan their own workload in accordance with projects allocated to them by the Project Manager.
11. The postholder will demonstrate a broad range of project management skills, including communicating with internal and external stakeholders, awareness of good design practice and basic construction health and safety.
12. To understand and adhere to all relevant legislation and guidance.
13. The post holder will be required to attend an annual performance appraisal where objectives will be set.
14. Demonstrate commitment to MFT principles and flexible working patterns, to meet the needs of the service and staff.
15. Adhere to safe working practices and the Health and Safety at Work Act, any amendments and additions which are current.
16. To assist in developing and maintaining a safe working environment.
17. To adhere to the Estates Department code of dress; business attire will always be worn.
18. To undertake any training required in order to maintain competency including mandatory training, i.e. Fire Safety, Manual Handling, First Aid.
19. Undertake any other duties which is deemed appropriate to the band when requested by Project Manager/ Estates Manager.

Essential criteria
- Meets the educational entry requirements of a Level 3 Vocational qualification and committed to undertaking and successfully completing the HNC National Certificate/Diploma as part of an established apprenticeship programme.
- Good standard of literacy and numeracy.
