Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

We’re delighted to offer an Operating Department Practice degree-level apprenticeship developed in conjunction with London Southbank University.
As the original home of Operating Department Practice, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is committed to training the perioperative practitioners of the future and to increase the scope and practice of this important allied health profession.
Be a part of some of the most exciting perioperative specialties in the country. Train as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) as part of our new and innovative apprenticeship at GSTT, in partnership with London South Bank University.
ODPs are highly skilled and essential members of the surgical team who care and support patients during their operative procedures. The role of the ODP essentially covers three interconnected phases of perioperative care, anaesthetics, surgery, and recovery.
Upon successful completion of all academic criteria and clinical competencies you will be eligible to register as an Operating Department Practitioner with the Health and Care Professions Council.
[Please note that the Banding for this role is currently under review, with a view to amend to Band 4 subject to approval]

- The care certificate must be completed before the commencement of the HEI taught component of the apprenticeship. Candidates will be expected to be up to date with all their Trust’s mandatory training requirements including basic life support and manual handling
- Candidates must be at least 18 years old upon commencement of the programme.
- Offers are also subject to a satisfactory joint interview with the GSTT and LSBU, and completion of apprenticeship pre-course documentation

- Provide excellent customer care skills to patients
- Undertake a range of delegated clinical care duties to deliver agreed plans of care, acting on own initiative.

- To act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.

- Assist in the cleaning of clinical areas and equipment, ensuring that the area is clear of potential hazards, removing clinical waste and contaminated items to relevant collection areas.
