Your Main role will be to cover the Phlebotomy service at the Churchill Hospital with occasional shifts throughout the trust providing a patient friendly service as required, some weekends may be part of your rota,
Phlebotomists will be expected to provide a helpful and professional service to patients and healthcare staff within the Trust
We are looking for individuals with the skill and flexibility to support our services on the Outpatients and Trust wards and on occasions the Mobile service.
The individual will be responsible for ensuring that the blood specimens are taken in a manner that does not cause undue anxiety to the patient and that laboratories are provided with timely, high quality blood specimens taken in tubes that are appropriate for the tests requested.

Main duties of the job
We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our phlebotomy team .
Two years phlebotomy experience is essential.
This will be mainly based at the Churchill but on occasions may be asked to work at other sites.
On occasions this post will require the member of staff to travel to other hospital sites within Oxfordshire
The applicant must have a full driving license and access to a suitable vehicle.
Skills/Responsibilities
- To take venous bloods safely from patients on the wards and outpatient departments.
- To check the identity of the patient, ensure than any special instructions have been followed (e.g. period of fasting) and to gain patients consent to proceed.
- To take venous blood of good quality using aseptic techniques and ensuring minimum of pain and discomfort to the patient.
- To make sure samples arrive at the labs safely
- To work within a team and also lone working,
- To work with a computer on wheels using the EPR system
- To work in an efficient manner to ensure the phlebotomy work is completed in the best practical time.
- To obtain and keep up to date with all learning
- To ensure that safe working practises are maintained in the interests of both staff and patients according to Trust and Departmental policies
- To co-operate with strategies to reduce cross infection
- To make judgements regarding the viability of taking blood.

- Good sound general education
- Experience & Knowledge of phlebotomy is a specified criteria
- Understand the principles of patient confidentiality
- Previous healthcare experience
- A knowledge of the importance and relevance of phlebotomy in the deliverance of patient care Skills & Ability Essential Desirable

Confidentiality
During the course of your employment, you may see, hear or have access to information on affairs of patients and staff. Post holders may only use such information as appropriate to carry out their normal duties. Post holders must not disclose personal, clinical or commercial information to any unauthorised third party; any such disclosure will be investigated and may lead to disciplinary action and possible dismissal. These obligations are in line with common law duty, the Caldicott principles on patient data, the Data Protection Act, the Freedom of Information Act and other legislation which apply both during employment and after the termination of employment.
Infection Control
To ensure the practice of self and others is at all times compliant with infection control policy and procedures. Hand hygiene must be performed before and after contact with patients and their environment.
Governance and Risk Adhere to all Trust policies, procedures and guidelines. Follow professional and managerial codes of conduct as applicable to the role. Take active steps to prevent theft or fraud in the workplace.
Duty of Candour The post holder is also required to ensure compliance with the statutory ‘duty of candour’. This is a legal duty to inform and apologise to patients if there have been mistakes in their care that have led to significant harm. It is aimed at helping patients receive accurate, truthful information from health providers achieving a wholly transparent culture.
Safeguarding
Employees must at all times treat all patients with dignity and respect and ensure that vulnerable adults and children are safeguarded from abuse and neglect within the provisions of the Trust’s Policies.
Training & Personal Development – Continuous Professional Development There is a requirement for all Trust Employees to take part in the annual appraisal process; this can be in the capacity of facilitating staff appraisals and participating in their own appraisal and development plan. The post holder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for his/her own personal development this includes attending all Trust Statutory and Mandatory training allocated for the role. In addition the post holder must be aware of their education responsibilities within their area of work.
