Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, with services covering the local authority areas of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. The Trust is part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care System (ICS) supporting a population of around 1.6 million people.
We have three main hospitals providing acute services to around 330,000 local residents. The pharmacy department is looking for a strong, motivated and strategic Deputy Director of Pharmacy . This is an exciting time for the department who are undergoing a lot of positive change. We have ambitious plans to develop our clinical pharmacy services, making even better use of our resources to serve our population most effectively.

This post leads the delivery of clinical pharmacy services with responsibility alongside the Director of Pharmacy for ensuring the smooth operating
and continuous improvement of pharmacy services to patients across the Trust. All senior leaders are expected to work as part of a cohesive
team and, when necessary, to take lead responsibility for corporate issues outside their immediate sphere of responsibility to achieve the
corporate objectives of the Trust.
Working for our organisation
Pharmacy services are provided in-house at both Blackpool Teaching Hospitals and Clifton Community Hospital under the direct management of
the Chief Pharmacist. Outpatient dispensing is provided onsite by a third party contractor.
The pharmacy team consists of 151.6 WTE staff at full establishment. Pharmacy has a strong and visible presence on wards with an average of
almost 80% of inpatient beds visited daily by a clinical pharmacist and 83% of pharmacist time spent on clinical activities. We are a very friendly
and welcoming team and pride our department on being a great place to work.
We recommend that all individuals employed in patient facing roles, or those located on a ward or department where patients receive a service should be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Providing leadership and management accountability for clinical pharmacy services throughout the Trust, ensuring effective use of
human and financial resources in pursuit of agreed pharmacy and corporate goals. - The delivery and development of a pro-active, high quality clinical pharmacy service which encompasses monitoring, decision making
and clinical governance requirements as necessary, in order to maintain clinical and operational cover. - Leading and directing the management, development and vision for the clinical pharmacy services with regards to the strategic
direction of the pharmacy department and the trust. - Supporting the Director of Pharmacy in all aspects of Medicines Optimisation, including associated standards required by regulators,
commissioners and other authoritative bodies such as General Pharmaceutical Council, Royal Pharmaceutical Society, CQC, NICE,
etc. - Joint accountability within the Pharmacy Senior Leadership team for governance and assurance around medicines management.
- Joint accountability for the operational management of the department and shared responsibility for the financial performance of the department, including the achievement of financial targets, balancing the potentially conflicting demands of budgetary requirements and clinical standards.
- Supporting the Medication Safety Officer by promoting medicines safe use, implementing local and national medication safety initiatives
and improving reporting and learning from patient safety incidents. - Ensuring the Trust has a detailed understanding of how the pharmacy service operates to ensure that there is translation of impact of
Trust service changes and development on pharmacy services, advocating on behalf of the pharmacy department as necessary. - Supporting pharmacy developments within the Integrated Care Board to maximize on opportunities to work collaboratively with partners across the systems.
- Providing outstanding leadership to all staff in the department, setting goals and standards for others and ensuring the fullest
contribution to the development and delivery of pharmacy’s strategic goals. Demonstrate a highly visible and collaborative leadership
style underpinned by the Trust values. - Working with the Director of Pharmacy to ensure robust arrangements are in place to support quality and governance within the department including highly effective systems and processes to provide assurance to the Trust on clinical quality and effectiveness;
safe staffing; risk identification and management; clinical audit; staff and patient satisfaction and the delivery of standards outlined by
the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and/or other regulatory bodies. - As part of the Pharmacy Senior Leadership Team maintain effective communications and joint decision making on all aspects of the
cross-department services. Work together to promote a cohesive and supportive service for best use of resources and to promote joint
working and future development.
