Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a well-motivated and enthusiastic Pharmacy Technician to join the Clinical Trials management team as a Band 7 Clinical Trials Operations Manager.
Although this role is full-time, part-time hours flexible to the needs of the team will be considered.

Operational: You will be responsible for the operational management and organisation of the pharmacy clinical trials service across the Trust and will be required to deal with any operational issues which may arise.
You will be responsible for writing and implementing standard operational procedures for clinical trials across the Trust to ensure compliance with ICH GCP clinical trials legislation. You will be expected to contribute to internal audits of trials and related services in order to implement change where appropriate.
You will be required to undergo the relevant training to allow final sign-off of trial-specific instructions written by appropriately trained personnel within the team. You will have the ability to handle a diverse, high volume workload in a busy environment and be confident in dealing with professionals both internal and external to the Trust either face-to-face, via email or telephone.
Managerial: You will possess supervisory, time management and interpersonal skills which will enable you to act as a role model and mentor for pharmacy trials staff thereby providing leadership, motivation, direction, advice and support. You will contribute to the recruitment and selection of new staff to the team and the on-going review and development of the Trust-wide Pharmacy Clinical Trials Service.
It is essential that you have substantial experience in the Pharmacy clinical trials setting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- The post holder is responsible for the operational management and organisation of the pharmacy clinical trials service across the Trust. Ensuring compliance with ICH-GCP guidelines, clinical trials regulations, the research governance frameworks and other relevant guidelines and policies.
- To assist in the development and organisation of the Trust-wide Pharmacy Clinical Trials Service for research involving medicines whereby Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals (NuTH) NHS Foundation Trust is acting either solely or jointly with Newcastle University as “study sponsor.”
- To participate in Trust-wide meetings regarding management and organisation of the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Service for both NuTH sponsored and NuTH hosted studies.
- Responsible for writing and implementing Standard Operational Procedures for clinical trials across the Trust in accordance with the Trust Clinical Trials Policies.
- Final check clinical trial-specific procedures written by senior pharmacy clinical trials technicians.
- Responsible for organising and delivering induction training and competency validation programmes for clinical trials and GCP for all levels of staff within the pharmacy.
- Responsible for recruitment and line management of pharmacy clinical trials technicians and assistants.
- To ensure that staffing levels are appropriate to the level of workload both on-going and in set-up at each of the Pharmacy trials units to provide capacity and capability.
- To act as a role model and mentor for pharmacy trials staff, providing leadership, motivation, direction, advice and support.
- To participate in Trust-wide meetings regarding management and organisation of the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Service for both NuTH sponsored and NuTH hosted studies.
- Performs Pharmacy assurance technical reviews on behalf of the Health Research Authority (HRA).
- Support professional development within the Pharmacy Clinical Trials team, mentor for staff undertaking further qualifications relevant to their role.
- To develop and deliver internal training programmes which will enable the Trust-wide Pharmacy Clinical Trials service to develop.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
- • S/NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services and approved underpinning knowledge e.g. BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent recognised pharmacy technician qualification
- • Registered with GPhC
Desirable criteria
- • Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical research or similar post-qualified qualification – or working towards
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- • Up to date knowledge and understanding of GCP,GMP and its application
- • Evidence of preparing worksheets/procedures
- • Knowledge and understanding of the Law and Ethics relating to the dispensing of medicines
- • Previous experience of project work, audit and change management
- • Working knowledge of current COSHH and Health and Safety Legislation
- • Evidence of professional CPD
- • Extensive post qualifying with some experience working in a hospital
- • Previous experience in clinical trials activities
- • Experience of working in a Pharmacy Patient Services environment
- • Experience as a team leader
- • Up to date knowledge of manufacturing legislation and procedures, e.g. Good Manufacturing Practice, pre-packing, quality assurance
- • Practical experience in the start-up, smooth ongoing operation and completion of a clinical trial on site, provision of adequate documentation and communication with the relevant people involved
