Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.
We have a reputation for clinical excellence and high quality teaching and research. We are part of King’s Health Partners, one of eight accredited UK academic health sciences centres. In partnership with King’s College London we have dedicated clinical research facilities including an MHRA accredited Phase I clinical trials unit.

An exciting key leadership opportunity has arisen within the HLCC management team. The role forms a key part of the Trust’s senior finance team and reports to the Associate Director of Finance for HLCC, with a professional accountability dotted line to the Trust’s Operational Finance Director. They lead the HLCC finance team, which comprises 16 individuals, including direct line management for five roles.

The Clinical Group is made up of five directorates across Royal Brompton, Harefield, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ sites. The directorates are Royal Brompton Heart, Lung & Rehab Services, Harefield Heart & Lung, PACCS (Pulmonary, adult critical care and sleep) and Cardiovascular. With an annual turnover of £700m and 4,900 staff across multiple sites, this is a busy, complex and exciting Clinical Group. Led by a multi-disciplinary Clinical Group Board, our teams provide outpatient, diagnostic and inpatient services across critical care units, wards and a suite of cath labs and theatres. Our merger with the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals in February 2021 presents us with an opportunity to be a world leading Heart and Lung service, from April 2022 when we became one Clinical Group.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Finance – HLCC Clinical Group the key responsibilities include:
• Working with Directorate Management Teams to ensure they have the resources to deliver safe and effective care and are able to meet financial objectives
• Ensuring that financial management is understood across the Clinical Group and that financial information produced enables that understanding
• Be responsible as a leading expert on the strategic financial planning agenda and programme for the Clinical Group, including the financial lead on developing financial strategies and business plans.
• Responsible for ensuring that the Clinical Groups financial direction is robust and fit for purpose. To ensure that as a financial expert to manage you constructively and positively challenge all aspects of the Clinical Groups financial and business performance.
• Responsible for the provision of financial leadership and guidance in delivering Trust wide programmes concerned with improved productivity, quality and efficiency programmes.
The post holder will act as a Trust wide expert leading on the development and implementation of organisation wide financial improvements and efficiencies. The role requires both clinical and non-clinical experience, working with senior Trust key stakeholders, persuading and influencing the financial direction of the Trust.
Responsible as a leading expert on the strategic financial planning agenda and programme for directorates, including the financial lead on developing financial strategies and business plans. To provide professional guidance in support to Senior Trust managers, including the presentation of cases and plans to Trust Executive Directors.

The Head of Finance will be responsible for the development, implementation and delivery of the procedures, policies of the department. To ensure that all Trust wide financial policies are adhered across the Trust.
The post holder will be required to deputise for both the Associate Director of Finance and Director of Operational Finance as required.
The Director of Operational Finance has authority to direct the activities of the post holder and their team, in consultation with the Clinical Group management team as appropriate. This includes in relation to financial recovery, financial reporting formats and timetables, business planning and any other matters the Director of Operational Finance is professionally accountable for.
The post holder will be asked to get involved with Trust wide finance initiatives, projects and programmes as required.

- A significant amount of senior management experience working at a financial strategic level, including setting, writing and implementing policies and procedures.
- A significant period of experience of working within an ever changing financial environment working at both a technical and personal level across a range of accountancy functions
