Do you want to further develop your skills in meeting the needs of children and young people with complex health and learning needs within special schools?
The Special schools service in Haringey is a multidisciplinary service comprising of Speech and Language Therapists, Specialist School Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Dieticians. The team is based within Special Schools and a sixth form college in Haringey. There is also input into school from wider members of the multidisciplinary team, including on-site school clinics with the Consultant Paediatrician, Dietician and CAMHS-LD service. Riverside school and Haringey 6th Form centre are committed to multiagency working with regular multidisciplinary team meetings with representation from health, education, and social services.
We have a band 7 transition post based within the special schools service working in a secondary school sand sixth form college for students with complex physical and learning needs including Autism. You will have opportunities to further develop your skills in AAC, autism and dysphagia. You will join a team of experienced therapists and other professionals. You will receive supervision from on-site specialist SLTs and could work with the multidisciplinary team in joint planning and therapy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
PATIENT/CLIENT CARE
To carry a personal clinical caseload to a high level of professional competence and demonstrate clinical expertise in the area of autism and children in Mainstream Schools.
To assess, differentially diagnose, plan and implement therapy for children with speech, language and/or communication difficulties on own caseload and supervise others to do so.
To work effectively with clients, carers, and colleagues around individual case management; providing advice, guidance and support as necessary and involving them in the planning and prioritisation of care wherever possible.
To provide second opinions in your field of clinical expertise to Whittington Health Integrated care team clinical staff on children with complex communicative and emotional disorders.
To reflect on clinical practice; adequately identifying strengths & needs of clients, reviewing their response to therapy and providing evidence of sound clinical judgement.
To monitor and review the progress of children on caseload and facilitate the development or modification of packages of care / targets as appropriate using evaluation/outcome measurement tools.
To adapt practice to meet individual client/carer’s circumstances, taking into account cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
To produce accurate, & detailed reports, therapy programmes, advice and information as necessary in a timely manner.
To respond to the requirements of the children and families act 2014 completing written advice which will contribute to Education, Health and Care assessments for children/young people who may have Special Educational Needs.
To support the effective transition of students between schools as appropriate.
To refer children/young people to other Health, Education or Social Services professionals as necessary.
To undertake home visits, as necessary, in compliance with Home Visiting Safety Policy.
COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIP SKILLS:
To be able to gather information that may be sensitive or complex and analyse it as part of a full assessment of a client’s strengths and difficulties.
To work closely with clients and carers using empathy, tact, reassurance and active listening to complete assessments, discuss results, and agree treatment options.
To routinely overcome barriers to communication during assessment and intervention. This includes the use of sign, symbols or other alternative and augmentation strategies with communication disordered clients/carers, as well as the use of interpreters for clients and carers who do not have English as a first language.
To discuss diagnosis and potential outcomes with parents/carers and work collaboratively in decision making regarding referral on and intervention.
To motivate difficult to engage clients/carers in the therapeutic process.
To negotiate and manage conflict effectively in a range of settings.
To deal with initial complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible
To form effective therapeutic relationships with clients and/or carers who may be under stress and/or having challenging behaviour.
To provide training to a variety of audiences on aspects of speech and language therapy.
KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
To demonstrate highly specialist knowledge underpinned by current evidence based practice and knowledge of national and international research.
To identify own training needs as part of the Professional Development Review in discussion with the Lead Therapist for The School and to attend training as agreed.
To carry out PDRs for more junior staff
To keep up to date with current clinical developments through reading, attendance at courses, meetings and Clinical Excellence Networks(CENs)
To maintain up to date professional registration with HPC and RCSLT at all times.
To participate in Peer Support Groups.
To develop and deliver specialist training informal and formal to others.
ANALYTICAL & JUDGEMENTAL SKILLS:
To be able to gather and analyse all information, including observation and formal assessment results, in order to identify the most appropriate intervention.
To adapt intervention as necessary according to individual need, progress and ability.
To provide second opinions to colleagues in complex cases.
To demonstrate the ability to reflect on practice and seek appropriate CPD in a variety of settings
To develop, record and adapt individual care plans, based on assessment results and response to treatment.

POLICY/SERVICE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION:
