We are seeking an experienced, motivated and inspiring registered sick children’s nurse to lead our busy children’s inpatient services at the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead.
The post holder will provide clinical, management and professional leadership to nursing staff at all levels within their area of responsibility, ensuring that nursing care is delivered to a high standard and that the nursing resource is managed effectively. The post holder will contribute to the on-going implementation of the nursing and midwifery strategy, in close liaison with senior matrons and the head of nursing. The post holder will also undertake the key functions of the matron role ensuring the attainment and monitoring of quality and clinical performance indicators and ensuring that any aspect of directorate service delivery is underpinned by the patient and service user experience. The post holder will play an important role in the development of services. The post holder will support the implementation and maintenance of effective governance arrangements whilst ensuring that nursing care is of the highest possible standard at all times with particular emphasis on dignity and compassion. The post holder will line manage departmental , ward sister/ charge nurses and clinical nurse specialists The post holder will spend at least 20% of time in clinical practice The post holder will deputise for the senior matron and head of children’s nursing as appropriate

1. Furthering the Trusts Governing Objectives

1.2 The post holder’s role in promoting and furthering these objectives will be commensurate with your grade and designated responsibilities.
2. Leadership
2.1 Provide a visible presence within the clinical areas and be responsible for leading the delivery of high quality care.
2.2 Ensure that the needs of patients are placed at the centre of care delivery, thus achieving trust and national standards for clinical quality, safety and patient experience.
2.3 Provide professional, clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and associated staff, and ensure the provision of a high quality, responsive nursing service.
2.4 Be accountable for all aspects of quality management related to the nursing and clinical area.
2.5 Lead the workforce and financial planning for nursing and support services within own areas of responsibility and where appropriate, work collaboratively across the trust to support these initiatives.
2.6 Support the development and implementation of clinical governance initiatives in conjunction with the senior matron and head of children’s nursing .
2.7 Lead the implementation of improvements in nursing practices within own areas of responsibility in line with local and national agenda and patient feedback .
2.8 To have a thorough understanding of safeguarding procedures and knowledgeable with respect to safeguarding triggers and risks.
2.9 To ensure the delivery and compliance of mandatory training requirements for all staff.
3. Managing/ Leading People
3.1 Ensure all staff have access to, and act within, Trust/departmental policies and procedures.
3.2 Be responsible for overseeing and ensuring the development of all staff across areas of responsibility.
3.3 Support sisters/charge nurses and specialist nurses to ensure they are developed to undertake management and leadership responsibilities to enable the effective running of their clinical areas.
3.4 Manage timely and effective recruitment and retention of staff in conjunction with Human resource department
3.5 Using the trust HR Policies and Procedures, manage clinical and non-clinical standards of poor performance, and the management of sickness and absence.
3.6 Ensure appraisals are carried out for all staff and training needs are identified with resources.
3.7 Manage Mandatory training levels and ensure that records are kept up to date
3.8 Resolve complaints as they arise through face to face communication as necessary and, when appropriate, investigate complaints relevant to remit and write responses.
3.9 Be ‘user-aware’ and deal at all times appropriately, i.e. professionally and politely, with all ‘users’ whether patients, their relatives, carers, other members of staff or the general public, and ensure this is engendered within areas of responsibility.
3.10 Liaise with senior/managerial staff to bring to their attention any problems identified.
3.11 Deputise for the senior matron and head of children’s nursing for planned and unplanned absences and provide cross-cover for matrons within own directorate.
3.12 Contribute to business, professional and strategic planning within the Division and the organisation as a whole.
3.13 Ensure Sisters/Charge nurses and specialist nurses identify and manage education, training, and support needs of all staff within their departments in relation to service needs.
4. Managing Patient Care
4.1 Act as a role model through the provision of effective professional leadership for relevant clinical areas and demonstration of competent and accountable paediatric clinical practice.
4.2 Maintain a consistent, visible, high profile in clinical areas of responsibility, ensuring accessibility for patients, family, carers and staff.
4.3 Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary clinical practice, explore new ideas and introduce positive, evidence-based change in line with local and national initiatives, e.g. NICE Guidance.
4.4 Negotiate or adapt patient care to provide solutions to complex and unusual problems, e.g. infection control outbreak.
4.5 Monitor and action any User patient feedback to improve patient care .
4.6 Ensure that patient-centred values and user feedback are fully considered in any service change or development.
4.7 Ensure that patient care is sensitive to the needs of a diverse population.
4.8 Actively support the Senior Matron and Head of nursing in the delivery of key performance indicators e.g. Nurse quality indicators;
4.9 Establish links with other individuals and specialist organisations relevant to service specialty, and is practised in accessing diverse sources of information, in order to maximise exposure to a wide range of robust and reliable information.
4.10 Actively support the infection control team in the development of the Trust’s infection control initiatives, and environmental audits.
4.11 Act as an expert resource relevant to service specialty in response to incidents, complaints and claims, reviewing trends and initiating practice review.
4.12 Work in collaboration with stakeholders in formulating and initiating strategies and systems to identify and manage risk.
4.13 Actively promote legislation and responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act. Be aware of, and follow, policies and procedures with regard to patients, themselves, other members of staff, equipment and the general public.
4.14 Act as an expert nursing advisor to trust committees, e.g. Clinical Practice Committee, Health & Safety and Clinical Risk Management, when required.
5. Infection prevention and control (IPC) and reduction of healthcare associated infections (HCAI)
5.1 Create an environment and culture in which infection prevention and control is intrinsic to care delivery by setting and monitoring environmental standards and take action to ensure compliance to cleaning audits and PEAT inspection specifications are met.
5.2 To ensure all staff understand their role and contribution to patient safety in relation to infection prevention and control and have the knowledge and competencies to provide optimal care by utilising staff appraisals, objective setting, link nurses and champions to promote best practice and monitor compliance.
5.3 Ensure IPC and HCAI surveillance, audit and RCA data are analysed and utilised to inform priorities, actions and interventions to reduce infection.
5.4 Establish a communication framework in which members of the team work effectively internally and externally across clinical teams and across the Trust to optimise the patient journey and to improve patient outcomes.
6. Managing Resources
6.1 Be responsible in collaboration with senior matron/head of children’s nursing for the budgetary management of all services across clinical areas of responsibility.
6.2 Actively manage resources including human (staffing), material and financial (budgetary).
6.3 Ensure a high quality service is delivered within agreed budget by optimising all available resources representing value for money.
6.4 Support the Directorate team in the development and implementation of the annual cost improvement programme in accordance with the trust targets and timetable.
7. Influencing and Developing Policy
7.1 Contribute to professional policy making by assisting the senior matron / head of children’s nursing in developing a children’s nursing strategy.
7.2 Be responsible for the development of an effective performance monitoring system for targets set within the children’s nursing strategy and provide the senior matron with quarterly progress reports.
7.3 Identify, implement, and evaluate standards of care as part of a programme of continuous quality improvement, utilising agreed benchmarks and toolkits
7.4 In conjunction with the nursing directorate and senior matron implement and ensure adherence to the nursing clinical audit programme as identified in the audit timetable, and monitor action plans.
7.5 Prioritise service provision, taking into account varying demands and available resources.
7.6 Work with the senior matron and head of children’s nursing in providing opportunities for on-going professional development to all staff.
7.7 Agree annual objectives and undertake staff appraisals with all direct reports, ensuring that these reflect personal, professional and organisational goals in the context of the Knowledge and Skills Framework.
