The NHS in England has an ambition to reduce the levels of hepatitis C and hepatitis B transmission to improve public health outcomes. Which will contribute to the World Health Organisation (WHO) 2030 goals of the elimination of viral hepatitis as a public health threat.
As Public Health England have a strategy to achieve by 2025, which aims to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health problem, by reducing new viral hepatitis infections by 90% and reduce deaths due to viral hepatitis by 65%. We are therefore looking for innovative, forward-thinking individuals who can help achieve the end goal of elimination.
Greater Manchester has one of the highest prevalence rates for HCV infection in the UK – with estimates from Public Health England that around 17,500 individuals are chronically infected, but just over 10,000 are diagnosed, and only a few thousand have been successfully treated.
With the roll out of 'Opt out' testing in our Emergency Departments the number of patients being tested and treated for viral hepatitis has increased. Which in turn, increases our clinic capacity and workload.
