Detailed job description and main responsibilities
JOB SUMMARY
- A proactive role-model that supports practice development; clinical education; workforce transformation; and research and innovation in maternity across the Family Health Division to ensure the successful delivery of the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) Nursing and Midwifery (N&M) Strategy. The Midwifery Clinical Educator works to support the priority objectives of the Division
- Supports leadership and gives advice and support, fostering a learning culture that values high quality patient care, evidence based practice, research and innovation
- Works in partnership with the practice development leads, clinical leads, senior midwives and nurses, matrons, ward/clinic and community managers to ensure the delivery of the N&M Strategy and implementation of effective strategies to enhance staff satisfaction, staff engagement, improved staff retention and multi-disciplinary team working to achieve agreed common goals and outcomes
- Ensures the highest standards of education, research, and clinical care are in place. In collaboration with the trust and practice development leads implements, maintains and evaluates systems and processes, which ensure standards, are maintained
- A proactive role model who leads in the clinical environment on the provision of clinical educationand assessment of competence in the ward, department and/or community setting.
- Responsible for the continued development of evidence-based midwifery practice across the maternity service
- A clinically credible practitioner, the post holder will utilise their clinical experience and related skills to provide support for all staff and demonstrate a commitment to the development and advancement of midwifery practice

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Be responsible for the assessment, delivery and evaluation of clinical education according to individual staff learning needs in clinical practice.
- Be a visible point of contact for staff and students working in practice on a daily basis.
- Promote reflective practice and experiential learning opportunities developing a learning culture in the clinical environment.
- Facilitate the development and maintenance of clinical staff competence in the use of medical equipment in the clinical area by liaising with identified equipment trainers in the maternity unit in order to comply with the trust’s health and safety policy.
- Be a visible role model and example to ensure that the dignity, rights and confidentiality of the patient and individual team members are protected and maintained in accordance with national standards and guidelines.

Managerial
- Ensure the delivery of care is in accordance with the policies, procedures, guidelines and practices of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and ensure all staff are up to date with such procedures.
- Assist with the establishment, motivation and development of the team. Assist with the identification of individuals’ personal and developmental needs through performance reviews and competency assessment and in conjunction with the Practice Development Leads and ward/unit manager complete training needs analysis.
- In conjunction with the Practice Development Leads and ward/unit manager, review team composition, performance and deficiencies to ensure the correct skill mix is available to provide quality patient care. Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff as appropriate.
- In partnership with the Practice Development Leads and ward/unit manager, establish a clear focus and direction for the team. Allocate work among the team ensuring staff understand the purpose and objectives of the directorate and the clinical educators role within the team. Provide them with guidance and support in order for them to fulfil their roles. Ensure that they are kept informed of directorate policy, strategy and progress.
- Contribute to the creation of a positive team and working environment, promoting flexible working. Encourage team members to demonstrate initiative in their application to practice. In conjunction with the PDLs and ward/unit manager, identify and minimise interpersonal conflicts that may affect team or individual performance.
- Contribute to the monitoring and control of expenditure and the use of resources.
