Gwybodaeth
We provide a full range of acute clinical services from Northampton General Hospital and Danetre Hospital in Daventry. We are a designated cancer centre and have recently invested in a number of additional specialist services, including in-patient renal services and interventional cardiology. All elective inpatients and emergency admissions are screened for MRSA. As part of our work to improve clinical outcomes we are taking part in a national patient safety programme and have invested in systems to capture patients views on the service we provide. We understand that sometimes a small change can make a big difference for patients.
Our whole focus is on improving the quality of care given to our patients. We see quality as encompassing the following elements:
Clinically effective services
Safe services
The best possible experience for patients
We also believe in involving others in what we do and celebrating success.

We are looking to recruit a Junior Clinical Fellows to the department of medicine at Northampton General Hospital. This post starts at FY1 level as soon as possible for 4 months and can then possibly extendable till 5/8/25. They will work initially in Care of Elderly on Knightley ward and work on call rota which is a 1 in 11 rota out-of-hours shift.
The initial vacancy arises because of a gap in the 30 FY1 Medicine posts filled by the Foundation School. The post is suitable for a new Doctor looking to complete their Foundation year competencies. After that the post-holder will be able to move forward appropriately into other FY2/JCF posts from the start of the next academic year.
NGH has a strong track record of nurturing non-Deanery doctors towards their chosen training programmes. It is because of this success that we re-recruit each year and this post will continue after August because we know many of our existing JCFs have been (or will be) successful in their applications to Internal Medicine Training, GP specialist training and Higher Specialist Training this year. Many of our consultants are ‘home-grown’ NGH trained and there is a hospital wide ethos of supporting junior doctors in developing their careers.
General medicine at Northampton General Hospital provides trainees with the opportunity to gain experience of all the medical specialties on one site. Working on the wards provides excellent experience of the full range of medical problems. The acute medicine is truly unselected and many trainees have gained invaluable experience at the hospital before moving onto their chosen specialty. The department is well supported by consultant staff with five consultant acute and specialist physicians on the Acute Admissions wards daily and senior ward rounds on all the medical wards. There is a busy Same Day Emergency Centre also staffed by the Acute Team.
Each post will rotate around three wards in four-monthly blocks over the course of each year. Most JCF will spend at least 4 months on the Acute Admissions Hub (Nye Bevan) or one of the AIM/GIM wards. We do make every effort to discuss training needs with each doctor and to accommodate specialty interests of the successful candidates as far as possible.

These posts will be based at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust and rotate around the whole of the large Medical Division over time according to service needs and the career aspirations of the successful applicants.
Please note these posts are not for MTI status and NGH cannot offer this within Medicine
The post holder will work alongside their ward team of Consultants, SpRs, SCF and other junior medical staff along with all other multidisciplinary health care professionals.
The successful candidate will be allocated an educational and clinical supervisor and encouraged to complete training assessments in line with other trainees at the same level. This includes access to our highly successful Simulation Suite and to JCF -specific training in the Nye Bevan. The training programme is based on the JRCPTB IMT core curriculum and includes mentorship in applying for IMT, GPvST etc.
We wish to appoint candidates with a good foundation in Medicine who are looking towards a career in Medicine, or who wish to broaden their experience before a career choice.
The majority of training will be on-the-job with close involvement of the consultants. The department has a weekly lunchtime teaching session and there will be opportunity to develop as an educator through support and training of junior colleagues.
The Directorate of Medicine has FY1 training days on Thursday afternoons with an extensive program of specialty interests and topics across the whole range of general medicine; Junior Doctors are encouraged and supported to take part in clinical case presentations.
In addition we offer dedicated patient safety lectures and practical training on procedures such as ultrasound guided CVP insertion. We have a state-of-the-art Simulation department who provide sessions both to doctors in training and those in Clinical Fellowships. The full programme provides junior doctors with a comprehensive training package.
