The Manchester Cytology Centre is looking for an Associate Practitioner to be responsible for ensuring the organisation and delivery of a coordinated and responsive cervical cytology sample reception and LBC processing service in a manner consistent with Trust and local policies, procedures and protocols. Duties will include supporting the administration and management of the service, supervising MLAs ensuring that staff carry out their duties in accordance with established policies and procedures, training and first line management of staff including appraisals and other HR processes.
The post holder is required to support the department in delivering a comprehensive service over 6 days.

· The post holder will supervise a team of MLAs in the Cervical Cytology section of the department.
· They will provide support to MLAs, scientific and administrative assistance to Biomedical Scientists and Consultant staff in the receipt and processing of cervical screening samples.
· They will direct, supervise and train MLAs and trainee staff as appropriate.
· They will be competent in the use and trouble-shooting of a range of automated, semi-automated and manual instrumentation.
· Confidentiality, accuracy and attention to detail are essential.

- Foundation degree in Healthcare Science, Certificate of Achievement Part 2, Apprenticeship Level 4, NHSCSP Certificate of Competence or equivalent qualification or demonstrable equivalent knowledge and experience.

Knowledge & Experience

- Evidence of training & development within a relevant pathology discipline.
- Have substantial working knowledge, both practical and theoretical of various methods employed within Laboratory Medicine
- Demonstrate sufficient knowledge and skills to be able to train other staff
- Competent to process specimens
- Evidence of using complex laboratory equipment.
- Understanding of Laboratory Health and Safety procedures and protocols.

Skills

- Demonstrate supervisory and staff management skills.
- Able to communicate information both verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner
- Evidence of working as part of a team
- Effective at prioritising competing workloads, using time management skills.
- Manual dexterity and hand eye coordination for procedures where accuracy and precision is required using manipulation of fine tools for troubleshooting equipment.
- Able to show self motivation and use initiative, recognising when to refer upwards
- Able to keep clear and accurate records, showing attention to detail and perform basic calculations
- Able to read, understand and follow written instructions and apply knowledge so as to undertake and assist in reporting on biomedical investigations.
- Ability to recognise and understand what good standards of quality are and apply them at all times.
- Experience of Laboratory IT programmes for data entry and result entry.
- IT skills: use of spread sheets, data bases and word processing
- Physical ability to move supplies, samples and storage units between floors utilising trolleys and lifts
