Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

About

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The merging of the two organisations was integral to regional NHS plans to deliver improved quality of care and to make changes in existing care models.

The merger provides an opportunity to reconfigure services in a way that provides the best healthcare services to the city and improves the quality of care and health outcomes that patients experience.

The Trust runs Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool University Dental Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

It serves a core population of around 630,000 people across Merseyside as well as providing a range of highly specialist services to a catchment area of more than two million people in the North West region and beyond.

The Trust has an annual turnover of around £890m and a combined workforce of over 12,000 staff, making it one of the largest employers in the region. It also has a successful Volunteers scheme, with more than 900 volunteers providing support in a variety of roles.

Aintree Hospital is located in Fazakerley, in the north of the city. Its £35 million Urgent Care and Trauma Centre, which contains the hospital’s Emergency Department, Major Trauma, Critical Care services and Frailty Assessment Unit, was formally opened by the Duke of Cambridge in 2017. The hospital’s 10-storey tower block, which houses the majority of Aintree’s wards, is undergoing a £15 million refurbishment that began in June 2020 and is expected to last 30 months.

Broadgreen Hospital, which is co-located in south Liverpool with Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is home to a number of elective surgical, diagnostic and treatment services, together with specialist rehabilitation.

Liverpool University Dental Hospital, which is rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, is co-located with the Royal. It supports dental teaching and provides emergency care and a range of specialist dental services including restorative dentistry, paediatric dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery and medicine and a Consultant-led Dental Sedation Unit.

Royal Liverpool University Hospital, located in the city centre, is a specialist centre for nephrology, renal transplantation, nuclear medicine, haematology, lithotripsy, dermatology, urology and dental services.

Its High Consequences Infectious Disease (HCID) unit, one of five in England, was critical in the country’s initial response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is also a national centre for ocular oncology (eye cancer) and a regional centre for pancreatic, urological, ocular, testicular, anal, and oesophago-gastric cancers, specialist palliative care, specialist radiology and specialist pathology and chemotherapy services.

An integral part of the Trust’s bold and exciting future is the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital. Construction of the new hospital is progressing well and a new timetable for completion is being finalised.

The Trust’s hospitals are founding members of Liverpool Health Partners.  Now as a merged organisation the Trust, which hosts the NIHR North West Coast Clinical Research Network, aims to leverage its enhanced research and innovation capability to further expand the portfolio of its development work for the benefit of patients. The Trust collaborates closely with the University of Liverpool, Edge Hill University, Liverpool John Moores University, the University of Chester and other NHS organisations.

The Trust has a membership of over 20,000 public and staff members. Following the merger, a new Membership and Engagement Committee has been established by the Council of Governors to ensure the Trust has a representative membership, which is seen as an integral part of its vision to be a leading provider of the highest quality

The Trust featured in two series of BBC2’s award-winning documentary, Hospital, broadcast in 2019 and 2020, and in January 2020 the Trust was nominated for admission to Liverpool City Council’s Freedom Roll of Associations and Institutions, the city’s highest civic honour.
