Job overview
The Strategy Team delivers a mix of long-term strategy and short-term consultancy style pieces of work; offering post holders challenge, stretch, and variety.
At the heart of strategic development in the NHS, the team works across directorates to inform strategic decisions and shape policies. The team plays a key role in supporting the development of overall NHS strategy, leading specific strategic reviews and building strategic capability and insight across the organisation.
The team has a varied portfolio and examples of work includes:
- The Long Term Workforce Plan
- A review of productivity and efficiency across the NHS
- A new Long Term Infrastructure Strategy
- Working with DHSC on a new Major Conditions Strategy
- The Fuller Stocktake of integrated primary care
The Strategy Team also supports wider strategic decision making and capability, such as:
- Supporting the Chief Executive and the Board in strategic discussions; for example, on strategic opportunities and risks
- Work with finance and planning colleagues in spending reviews and strategic prioritisation
- Conducting ‘horizon scanning’ studies of key trends related to health and healthcare
- Short problem-solving projects to support priority decisions or areas of business improvement
- Building the strategic skills and capabilities across the organisation.
Advert
The post holder will have an excellent understanding of business management processes, facilitate discussions, and advise colleagues on best practice in the definition of processes, develop and document those processes for agreement, and oversee their delivery into operational policy
- Lead the Group’s Business Management function and management of Business Management ‘pod’. Managing the team to deliver effectively, including performance, training and development.
- Delivering business management processes for the Strategy Group that enable effective delivery of business, including supporting the senior leadership team with planning and management of the Group’s activities, including:
o Business processes: Ensuring team are using correct business processes, including providing advice and support for procurement and business case processes. Providing reporting and assurance to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) on areas such as accommodation, recruitment and staffing information.
o Risk Management: collating the risks for the Strategy Group, supporting project managers in using the right tools and approaches to effectively identify, monitor and mitigate risks
o Be a member of the extended leadership team within the Strategy Team, support activities including staff health and wellbeing, development and training

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Budgets: overseeing budgets and providing monthly budget analysis and dashboard to SLT. Supporting Programme Leads in programme budgeting and forecasting, working with management accounts to coordinate updates on all Strategy Group budgets. Ensuring requisitions are raised.
- Business Planning: maintaining the project pipeline for new Strategy projects, supporting SLT to monitor progress against commitments
- Workforce planning: Managing business management team in delivering recruitment processes for Strategy Team.
- Corporate Returns: Managing and overseeing all corporate business returns, including planning and workforce returns, structures and organograms, risk registers, and business continuity activities.
