Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your specialist skills, work across multiple clinical areas (inpatients, outpatients and community), supporting the provision of a seamless tracheostomy service and contribute to high-quality patient care.
You will work within a supportive team environment with opportunities for professional development and receive regular clinical supervision and mentoring from the highly experience band 7 clinical nurse specialist within the team to support your growth.

As a clinical nurse specialist, you will be an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team working together to deliver this specialist service. You will be responsible for developing and working within evidence-based specialist pathways of care, guidelines, protocols and patient group directives to support patients and their families to improve care delivery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide specialist nursing care, advice and education for patients with tracheostomies, and devise plans to ensure needs are met
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised patient care plans. This includes history taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations
- Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the speciality. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead others to do the same
- Lead complex discharge planning to facilitate early discharges and hospital avoidance strategies
- Offer clinical expertise, supervision and support to staff, patients, and families
- Participate and lead in staff education and training programs
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to ensure comprehensive patient care
- Support research activities within the specialty
- Work towards achieving competence om being an autonomous practitioner within the speciality – tracheostomy

- BSc in Nursing or equivalent qualification

- Intermediate life support qualification

- Evidence of continuous professional development in relevant areas e.g. head and neck course, ICU course
Previous experience
Essential criteria
- Significant post-registration experience in tracheostomy care and management
- Experience of teaching/ assessing/ supervising others in a clinical setting
Desirable criteria
- Experience in critical care, respiratory, stroke/neuro or head and neck/ENT surgery units
- Previous experience as CNS or other senior role
