Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

The post holder will work in partnership with the General Manager, Deputy General Manager and senior nurses and managers, including clinical leads taking lead responsibility for the operational management of the cath lab with particular emphasis on patient flow.
The post holder will lead the cath labs in ensuring that the correct balance is struck such that activity is optimised, whilst ensuring safety of patient and staff is maintained and new ways of working are sought and implemented.
The post holder’s leadership will ensure that the labs remain fit for purpose and reflect an ever-changing environment.
In addition, the post holder will take lead responsibility for procurement of Cath Lab consumables, working through the Deputy General Manager or relevant procurement leads.
Day to day accountability will be to the Deputy General Manager. The post holder will be line managed by the General Manager for Cardiovascular.

Department Information
The Cardiology service has access to 64 inpatient beds, a 6 bedded CCU and an ambulatory unit for treat and transfer patients. There are five catheter laboratories with access to a sixth catheter laboratory in the KCL facility in the North Wing, a hybrid theatre and six echocardiography rooms. There is a specialised department of nuclear medicine, MR/CT scanning and a positron emission tomography unit.

Management and Leadership
· Line management responsibilities including recruitment, induction, appraisal, development and retention of staff as well as managing sickness and absence, disciplinary and performance issues that may arise. This needs to be undertaken in conjunction with professional leads.
· Lead and support organisational change and wider organisation to ensure efficient service delivery and productivity and compliance with Trust and NHS targets; this could include consultation with staff and promoting new ways of working, implementing new policies and procedures.
· Responsible for developing and motivating staff through effective personal leadership, ensuring views and decisions are communicated both up and down the management structure.
· Chair disciplinary, grievance and other formal panels, as and when required.
Quality, Risk and Clinical Governance
· Develop and implement a robust Clinical Governance system within the department, and evaluate its effectiveness.
· Implement effective risk management strategies within the Department.
· Contribute to the control of risk and use the incident reporting system, to alert the Trust to incidents or near misses that may compromise the quality of services.
· Monitor work areas to ensure that they conform to the required Health and Safety standards, in accordance with legislation.
· Ensure that standards of patient care are in accordance with the Trust’s policies, protocols and guidelines.
· Identify areas for process redesign and service improvement with the aim of improving and enhancing the patients’ pathway and direct care experience.
· Encourage and empower all staff to identify aspects of patient care that can be improved.
· Ensure all staff comply with mandatory training requirements.
· Promote and support training initiatives for all staff.
Financial Management
· Manage delegated budget responsibilities for area, ensuring income capture, adherence to agreed budget plans, identifying savings and implementing plans to reduce costs as appropriate.
· Work with the Finance Manager to ensure budgets are up to date and accurate, identify changes to budgets as required.
· Identify costs pressures, service development and cost improvement plans, develop business cases to meet requirements and present to local Performance Review Meetings, Clinical Operations Group and Trust Management Executive as required.
· Ensure compliance with Trust standing financial instructions.
· To analyse procurement information and use own judgement to manage high value stock
Strategy, Change and Service Improvement
· To lead on business planning for the cath labs and together with the clinical leads for the respective services, prepare bids for capital expenditure and to ensure that there are detailed plans to replace high value capital items such as X-Ray equipment, EP equipment and Haemodynamic equipment.
· To oversee delivery of business plans and capital programmes for the cath labs and lead on specific projects within the labs e.g. installation and upgrading of new labs
· Identify opportunities for service redesign, focusing on a patient centred approach to delivery; work to develop and lead plans to improve and develop services.
· Participate in Trust and area wide programmes that contribute to the modernisation of patient services.
· Investigate processes and define root cause problems in order to make service improvements in line with Trust strategy and modernisation initiatives.
· Act as management lead for the implementation of NSF’s and other initiatives
· Responsible for the delivery of agreed change and service improvement projects and initiatives.
· Work with colleagues to assist in the development and implementation of R&D, teaching and training programmes as required.
· Responsible for regular audit/surveys to support and inform service development.
Information Management
· To lead on the development of an IT Strategy for Cath Lab.
· To establish and oversee the production of regular reports showing Cath Lab utilisation, number of cases cancelled, reasons for cancellations / delay, use of high cost consumable eg. stents and such other reports that may be required taking into account demands on the service.
· To act upon the above reports and in conjunctions with HOS and director of cath labs, change systems and processes to improve where necessary.
· To use analytical skills and own judgement to decide how to act upon information reports.
· To continue the work on cath lab information capture and insight production.
Clinical Responsibilities and Patient/Customer Care
· Providing a visible, accessible and authoritative presence within the department, in whom patients can have confidence and turn to for assistance, advice, support and where appropriate, intervention.
· Ensure that all complaints are dealt with promptly and satisfactorily, taking corrective action and implementing action plans to avoid recurrence.
· Developing and supporting clinical leadership at all levels.
· Participate in the relevant On-Call Rota.
· Lead the development of clinical practice within the department through research and clinical audit initiatives, ensuring continued clinical effectiveness.
· Provision of direct patient care as appropriate dependent upon clinical skill set.
· Coordinate the operational aspects of decisions relating to case cancellations and list changes, in conjunction with the relevant clinicians and operational managers.
Professional Responsibilities
· Act at all times in a manner that upholds the reputation of the Trust and safeguards the wellbeing and dignity of patients and their relatives
· Ensure that all staff adhere to Trust policies and protocols and take action where appropriate
· Ensure that professional standards reach the required levels according to Codes of Professional Conduct/regulatory bodies
Communication
· Working with the Deputy General Manager to develop a robust communication structure within the Directorate involving the communication of complex information to a variety of different staff groups.
· Disseminate relevant Trust and Directorate information amongst all cath lab staff.
· Provide sufficient fora for cath lab staff to allow free flow of ideas and ensure all voices are heard for the overall improvement of the culture within the department.
Policy Development
· To work with clinical leads to develop, agree and implement standard operating procedures for the department.
· To ensure that all national and Trust policies are assessed, implemented and maintained in the department.
· To provide specialist advice on cath lab relates policy.
