The post-holder will be the named School Nurse for schools within the area. This role will incorporate a supervisory role for staff nurses working within the school nursing service.
The post holder will work as a member of the School Nursing Service and will work with schools, families, and the wider community to improve the health of school-aged children identifying the more vulnerable, and developing clear referral pathways so that all children and young people can reach their full potential.
This will be done by delivering the requirements from the service specification. They will work closely with the identified senior manager in each school providing expert information, guidance, and assessments as required.
They will support schools to empower parents, and CYP to make decisions that affect their health and wellbeing. They will work across health and education professionals and institutions, breaking down barriers to improve the sharing of information, ideas, and expertise.
Working with the Team lead they will develop appropriate databases, and contribute to reports as necessary reporting any issues/concerns that may arise.

As a highly motivated and dynamic school nurse, you will play a leading role in shaping our services as we are committed to meeting the health needs of children and young people through the delivery of the 5-19 Healthy Child Programme.
The school nurse will deliver high-quality evidence-based skilled nursing care within the schools of Bexley. You will be responsible for a defined caseload of secondary schools, and supporting junior staff with the management of primary schools. Applicants must hold a Specialist Community Public Health Qualification in School Nursing.
Adheres to the NMC Code and maintains own professional requirements in line with revalidation procedure.
Participates actively in continuing education programs and accepts responsibility for professional and self-development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Working with the team lead they will develop appropriate databases, contribute to reports as necessary, report any issues/concerns that may arise, and make sure that the service meets all targets in the service specification.
Works in partnership with the local Health Visiting service to ensure seamless care as the child progresses from the early years into school.
Adheres to and works within local and national child safeguarding policies in the prevention and early detection of abuse in all age groups.
Develops accurate factual reports, and attends case conferences, and other multi-professional meetings as required for identified children and their families.
Meets with all identified children at least once a term, and refers/signposts to other professionals/ services if identified.
Works in partnership with primary care, ensuring that where appropriate, the relevant GP practice is notified of CYP health concerns, to secure an integrated system of care that safeguards them.
Works in partnership with other key stakeholders to promote the welfare and safety of CYP.
E.g. contributing to keeping CYP safe from the dangers of radicalization and extremism and promoting safe practices and a culture of safety, including e-safety.
Offers strategic support to schools in order to contribute to reducing the number of children who enter the safeguarding system through preventative work.
Works in liaison with identified school staff to contribute to the delivery of health improvement, promotion, and preventative approaches through signposting to other healthcare professionals/ services and available resources, and support staff with appropriate training.
Promotes emotional well-being through the school-aged years working alongside children and young people to support those with emotional and mental health difficulties and referring to CAMHS where appropriate.
Has knowledge of other available resources to support emotional and mental well-being e.g. online, training packages.
Work in partnership with primary and secondary care colleagues to support children and young people with long-term conditions or complex needs, signposting and referring school staff to appropriate support and facilitating correct management of health conditions to ensure hospital admissions are kept to a minimum.
Works with the senior management team to develop a comprehensive Action Plan for the school which includes all policies, procedures, and guidelines, as an overview of SEN, safeguarding, and pastoral and medical needs together.
Ensures services are delivered in a culturally sensitive manner adapting the service provision accordingly to promote equal access to services eg use of interpreters, and flexibility of appointments offered.
Works to and maintains school nursing standards as agreed by Bromley Healthcare, informing the Service Lead when agreed standards cannot be met.
Develops and maintains professional links with similar services in other areas in order to share information and inform best practices.
Attends regular team meetings to promote effective communication and team, leads by example promoting best practices and high standards at all times.
Works with the Team Lead to ensure that all policies, procedures, and guidelines are monitored and review service delivery to ensure the service meets both national and local requirements.
Ensures that all incidents are reported appropriately using Datix and that the Team Lead is informed of these at all times.
Manages skill mix staff effectively, addressing issues such as poor performance and informing the Service lead of these issues in a timely fashion.
Participates in the orientation and induction of new staff, promoting good interpersonal relationships within the team.
Acts as a mentor in the education and training of pre and post-registration students. Facilitates other students as required. Acts as a preceptor for newly qualified nurses/ specialist practitioners in the School Nursing Service
Acts as a resource for skill mix staff offering guidance, support, and supervision.
Identifies own learning needs and that of skill mix staff within the team.
Remains up to date with current professional issues e.g. by attending professional forums, reading professional journals etc.
