Job overview
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, reliable, efficient and extremely organised person with scientific or health related experience, who can demonstrate good interpersonal skills. The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of data systems for respiratory viruses, for contributing to further development of systems within the department. The post will carry out scientific analysis, interpretations of the data held by the department.

This post will provide scientific support to the Virus Reference Department (VRD), Colindale.
The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of enhanced surveillance systems for respiratory viruses, for contributing to further development of systems as well as participating in research activities within the section and the department.
The post will provide key input into the project organisation, management, analysis and publications.
The post will carry out scientific analysis, interpretations of the data held by the section, and contribute to development of other new projects for dissemination, presentation and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
The post involves regular liaison with clinical microbiologists and physicians working in the field of respiratory viruses surveillance and research and with other health care professionals at the local and national level.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The potholders main responsibilities will be:
Surveillance system and project development
- Contribute to pandemic surveillance preparedness activities
- Contribute to the development of new projects for respiratory viruses infections in particular in relation to community surveillance
- Participate in research projects and surveillance related to respiratory viruses as appropriate to the work of the Department.
Data analysis
- In conjunction with others develop and maintain respiratory viruses-specific data bases e.g. related to hospital and laboratory surveillance
- Analyse and interpret complex scientific data, particularly in relation to hospital surveillance project to produce:
- regular scientific reports
- presentations at national or international meetings
- publications in peer reviewed journals
- other ad-hoc analyses
Database development
- Develop and maintain respiratory viruses-specific data-bases e.g. related to hospital and laboratory surveillance
- In conjunction with others responsible for managing respiratory viruses databases for England and Wales, oversee the redevelopment of these databases. This will involve working with software experts in the planning and transfer of the database into a new system
National and international outbreaks
- Liaise with medical and scientific staff in the UKHSA, NHS, and other bodies, to provide information necessary for respiratory viruses
Confidentiality
- Be aware of, and put into practice, relevant policies and procedures to maintain confidentiality of patient information. To maintain data confidentiality and security in compliance with UKHSA policies, the Data Protection Act, and other statutory requirements
Other surveillance activities
- Provide support for other surveillance activities as required within the Department
Clinical/Professional
- Ensure all VRD information systems adhere to UKHSA Security of Information policy and all Caldicott regulations
- Training
- You should pursue a programme of continuous professional development in accordance with any relevant professional registration or statutory requirements, while maintaining appropriate awareness of service provider requirements
Quality
In collaboration with the National Infection Service (NIS) Laboratories Quality Team, to:
- To help to maintain laboratory accreditation (e.g., ISO 15189, via UKAS or its successors) and other agreed national and international standards
- Maintain a high standard of work, and appraise and contribute to developing services so that they are safe, effective and economical and follows best practice
- Interpret, design, develop, establish and disseminate standards and policies in information/data management to international regulatory standards
- Work towards ensuring an efficient quality management system
- Contribute to internal and external quality assurance programmes
- Ensure compliance with ISO 15189 and other accreditation and certification standards. Ensure the continual development and compliance of internal and external audit programmes and corrective actions

This role is based at Colindale, London. Please note hybrid working is not available for this role.
Security Level Clearance Level Requirement
Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.
If based at one of our scientific locations you will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should
normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. For posts on UKHSA Civil Service terms and conditions, new entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band. For existing Civil Servants and roles advertised across government, the rules of transfer apply, i.e., level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive a 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
The Civil Service pay structure and progression is different from NHS Agenda for Change (AfC), most local authority pay grades and other systems that have annual pay increments. For further details, please refer to the Information Sheet- Starting Salaries & Benefits attachment.
For AfC or Medical/Dental posts, you must have the correct professional registration to be appointed. The pay will follow the AfC or Medical & Dental terms & conditions. You may be asked to provide evidence of previous service whilst we are conducting pre-employment checks to determine your starting salary.
For Temporary Appointments, if you are not currently a civil servant, you will take up the post on a Fixed Term appointment. If you are an existing Civil Servant, based outside of the UKHSA, you will take up the post as a loan which you will need your department to agree. You can not take the post up as a fixed term. If you are an existing UKHSA member of staff, you will take up the post as either a level transfer or a temporary promotion as per the UKHSA’s Pay policy.
Given the nature of the work of the UKHSA, as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act, you may be required in an emergency, if deemed a necessity, to redeploy to another role at short notice. You may also be required to work at any other location, within reasonable travelling distance of your permanent home address, in line with the provisions set out in your contract of employment.
