Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

We’re looking for an experienced programme manager to join South East London Cancer Alliance initially for a 2 year contract with potential for extension. You will have experience working in the NHS, and be aware of the Long Term Plan’s Early Diagnosis Ambition.

The SELCA Deputy Programme Manager – Early Diagnosis will be responsible for working with and supporting the team and wider stakeholders to implement an early diagnosis work programme across primary and secondary care working closely with the ICB, Place Based Teams, other Cancer Alliances and charities.
They will deliver transformational change, quality improvements, and value using, effective and sustainable approaches, to improve the early diagnosis of cancer patients across SE London. This role will involve complex negotiation and influence with senior service directors, clinicians and managers at both an operational and strategic level across primary and secondary care Trusts.
The job holder will have the ability to think, act and respond quickly to changing circumstances whilst maintaining a clear view of overall priorities. They will need to be able to work at a senior level in a cross-cutting multi-organisational setting, to facilitate organisational and culture change and the delivery of outcomes is vital to the success of this role roles.

The job holder will be based in the SEL Cancer Alliance Team’s London office 2-3 days per week, working from home for the remainder of the week. They will be expected to travel to trusts or meetings within SEL as agreed with the Senior Programme Manager – Early Diagnosis, and senior team.

This SEL Cancer Alliance vision is to provide the very best in cancer services and experiences to our patients. The key objectives for this role are to:
· Participate in the work of SELCA to support delivery of national cancer programme deliverables with a lead role focussing on early diagnosis of cancer.
· Improve the underlying knowledge and understanding of the challenges to improve early diagnosis and to work effectively with senior leaders and patients on plans to address these.
· Work with SEL partners to develop a robust SEL early diagnosis work programme to drive improvements in the proportion of cancers diagnosed at an early stage.
· Participate in local and regional work to improve uptake to the national bowel, breast and cervical screening programmes.
· Identify strategies to address inequalities and reduce variation in the early diagnosis of cancers across different population groups
· Work closely with primary care through lead GPs, Place Teams, Federations and Primary Care Networks (PCNs) to support education and training and the local population focussed work on early diagnosis.
· Work with London regional and national Cancer Alliance colleagues to develop a London strategy for population symptom awareness and sharing of evidence-based recommendations to improve early diagnosis of cancer.
· Supporting population-based service and cancer pathway transformation through collaborative work across the SE London health system and promoting a sense of collective responsibility across partners.
· Improving cancer patients' experience and quality of life though the delivery of excellence in diagnosis and clinical care.
· Maximise the opportunities for research and training across the system, linked to the early diagnosis agenda. This SELCA role will need to interact and work collaboratively with clinicians, managers, public health colleagues and external partners to deliver improvements in the proportion of cancers diagnosed at an early stage in SEL population.
