We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 8a Clinical Psychologist / Clinical Lead to join us in Wirral Access / 0-18 Team, CYPMHS. The post is full time but we are also open to considering requests for part-time hours.
Wirral Access Team provides comprehensive assessment, formulation, and signposting for children and young people presenting with moderate to severe mental health problems. This new role of 8a Clinical Psychologist / Clinical Lead will be a valuable addition to the multi-disciplinary team.
MyMind CYPMHS in Wirral are working together with families and community services to improve mental health through accessible, inclusive, specialist care and support, to increase children and young people’s potential and life chances.
The post holder will work closely with the Clinical Co-ordinator, Team Manager and the Consultant Clinical Psychologist to offer clinical leadership and strategic oversight to Wirral Access Team. They will have a role in liaising with other CYP organisations across Wirral, to ensure effective inter-agency working and service development.

The Clinical Psychologist / Clinical Lead will offer highly specialist psychological assessment of children and young people presenting with complex mental health difficulties. The role will involve offering case discussion / debrief to support psychological thinking about families, and offering psychological advice and guidance to colleagues in relation to cases with high levels of risk and complexity.
The post holder will be responsible for a range of clinical governance activities, to ensure safe, effective and high-quality service delivery. They will develop the workforce through provision of clinical supervision, psychological consultation, and continuing professional development, to members of the team. They will engage in a range of research, audit and service evaluation activities to promote best practice and ensure positive outcomes for those who access our service.
The post holder will advance the application of evidence, theory, and research into practice within the team. It is anticipated that the post holder will offer placements for Trainee Clinical Psychologists to promote a culture of learning in the team, and embed psychological approaches.
This is an exciting time to join the service to be part of the thinking about how we meet the national access target in terms of strengthening formulation. This is a dynamic opportunity to provide a bridging role between our access (initial assessment team) and our 0-18 MH team, to support formulation, care planning, consistency of assessment and guide the extended assessment pathway.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specific models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, as accredited by the BPS.
- Maintain Chartered status.
- Completed post qualification training re: Clinical Supervision.
- HCPC registration
Desirable criteria
- Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff education and training, and/or other fields of applied psychology.
- Specialist therapy training, (e.g. CBT, DDP, Family and Systemic therapies.)
- Previous experience of working in teams.
Knowledge and Expertise
Essential criteria
- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment and intervention.
- High level of ability to communicate effectively at a written and oral level. The ability to write complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to children/young people, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
- Ability to function independently as a Clinical Psychologist in a team.
- Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex multivariate data analysis
- Practised within the clinical fields of psychology.
- Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS.
- Specialist knowledge and expertise in relation to a particular speciality as demonstrated by post-doctoral training. This may take the form of a continuous training course, or a number of short courses, or evidence of workplace training via specialist supervision.
- Ability to use this specialist knowledge for service development as well as in a clinical capacity
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of legislation in relation to children and young people and mental health
- Experience or special interest in. areas such as Attachment Theory and associated therapeutic interventions, vulnerable groups and their specific needs e.g. CIN. CP, CLA, YOS and/or Eating Disorders and their specialist treatment programmes
Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum two years’ experience post qualification of specialist psychological assessment and intervention with children/young people across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in-patient settings.
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity, including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems and verbal/physical abuse.
- Experience of working as a qualified Clinical Psychologist for two years, with full responsibility for children/young people’s psychological care, individually and as part of a multiprofessional care-plan.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of teaching, training and supervision.
- Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
- Experience of service users and carer involvement in services.
- Post qualification experience of working with children and young people with chronic health conditions.
