Sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassaemia are serious and lifelong health conditions, although treatment can help manage many of the symptoms such as pain and infections. The ambition for the NHS England quality improvement programme for sickle cell disease and thalassaemia services is to improve the access, experience, and outcomes for patients with SCD and thalassaemia (pw SCD thal).
Key projects and initiatives within the SCD thal QiP portfolio include:
· Development and delivery of a QI programme to improve the care pathway for persons with thalassaemia and SCD
· Develop and roll out pilots that enable care to be delivered for uncomplicated vaso-occlusive crisis in SCD outside an ED setting
· Enable improvements that lead to achieving the delivery of treatment protocols according to the NICE guideline for pain relief for SCD
· Develop and use data, evidence and insights to formulate and drive actions for improvement of sickle cell and thalassaemia services
· Improve development of the expert SCD and thalassaemia patient by driving uptake of structured education
The SCD Quality Improvement Project Team (SCD QiP) is part of the National Healthcare Inequalities Improvement Programme and contributes to the promotion of equality and the reduction of health inequalities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
About us – The Healthcare Inequalities Improvement Programme (HIIP)
National Healthcare Inequalities Improvement Programme (HIIP) has been established to deliver the vision of exceptional quality healthcare for all, ensuring equitable access, excellent experience, and optimal outcomes.
The role of the HIIP is principally threefold; setting direction in relation to tackling healthcare inequalities across NHS England and the wider NHS; creating a positive improvement culture which champions data as a means of gaining actionable insight to drive interventions leading to reductions in health inequalities; and working with national teams and partners to ensure that we deliver the commitments to tackling health inequalities set out in the NHS Long-Term Plan.
Underpinning all our work is a strong focus on quality improvement with a real emphasis on data for improvement, strengths-based approaches and co-production with communities, service users and healthcare practitioners.
The HIIP has deep links across NHSE programmes, policy and clinical areas and strong connections with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) and local government.
With a national director in place driving the programme forward, and an established team to reflect the importance of this agenda, key projects within the portfolio include:
• Development of a Health Inequalities Strategy which will set out the strategic vision to narrow the health inequalities gap amenable to healthcare intervention.
• Development and delivery of a portfolio of projects to improve outcomes and quality of life for persons with sickle cell disease (pwSCD)
• A Health Inequalities Improvement Dashboard for NHS and local authority users, and further development of a public facing dashboard, to create virtuous circles of data; providing actionable insight leading to impactful interventions and intelligence about what works.
• Establishment of an enabling infrastructure for delivery including the Health Inequalities Improvement Forum (for regional and system health inequalities leads), a National Health Inequalities Improvement Network (for clinical leads) which both feed into a Health Inequalities Improvement Board.
• Working with policy areas and programmes across NHSE to hardwire health inequalities improvement into their structures, processes and the delivery of their work programmes.
About you
You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills as a key part of the role will be drafting high quality documents for a wide audience. Knowledge of the needs of and experience of clinical services provision for the care of pwSCD and thalassaemia and the SCD thalassaemia health policy landscape will be an advantage but not essential. You will be proficient in forming strong working relationships to bring about a common goal, working with a diverse range of stakeholders and clinicians at all levels from across the health system.
You will have the ability to meet strict deadlines, demonstrate initiative and be able to work alongside others to achieve positive outcomes. The ability to analyse and synthesise SCD and thalassaemia clinical information into briefings or papers would be an advantage.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate resilience and have a strong commitment to achieving high standards of project development and delivery.
If you can offer these skills together with a passion for reducing health inequalities and energy for driving innovation and transformational change then we would love to hear from you.
Please ensure line manager support has been secured before submitting your application
