Job overview
We are excited to offer the opportunity of a part time Band 6 Nurse specialist, within the Lung Cancer nurse specialist team based in Cardiothoracic at the Freeman Hospital.
This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside a very experienced team, who are passionate and dedicated, to ensuring the best care possible for their patients.
This role will work within an established team of lung cancer nurse specialist and will be vital, to ensure across trust sites, provides support to the lung cancer patients of the region, this will include clinics and MDT.
This role would be suited to a band 5 with experience of working within cancer care or a band 6 with a keen interest or specialist knowledge in lung cancer.
The role will sit within a wider lung cancer team, led by a consultant respiratory physician with clinical oversight and team lead by the existing band 7 specialist nurse. The team will have Matron line management support from within Respiratory Medicine at freeman hospital.

Hours and days of work are corporate standard and between the hours of 830 a.m. and 430p.m., Monday – Friday, we are open to adapt these hours for both part time and full time posts and welcome staff with a flexible, adaptable approach to work, in accordance with the needs of the service.
The role would be suitable for individuals who have an interest in caring for and managing lung cancer patients. Some previous experience within cancer care is desirable however not essential, as in-house training will be provided.

- Provide specialist clinical advice and support to tumour specific cancer multidisciplinary teams e.g. as required by DOH standards manual.
- Enable patients to attain their best possible quality of life, through treatment plans and promoting their choice of place of care / death.
Require enhance communication skills to assist in the breaking of bad news whilst providing telephone/face to face counselling

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse
specialist as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to provide guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.
Within the sphere of specialist practice:
o Is working towards advanced knowledge and skills within specialist sphere of practice.
o Contributes to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of
care pathways for a designated group of patients.
o Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
o Contributes to training and education within specialist area.
