Job overview
The Northern Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering Directorate provides a range of specialist clinical and scientific services to the Trust and has an active programme of medical device development and assessment. The Directorate focuses on meeting the needs of patients in the Trust and the NHS by delivering high quality services combined with an academic approach and a strong commercial awareness. The Clinical Bioinformatics and Computing service provides professional scientific computing and healthcare informatics expertise and advice to a wide range of stakeholders within and outside the Directorate.
The responsibilities of the role include delivery of analytic pipelines according to solid data science and statistics principles, development and application of analytical tools, leading a portfolio of projects, and liaising with stakeholders within the Directorate, the Trust and externally. The post-holder will contribute to the innovation activities of the Directorate and will be expected to support, contribute and initiate research and innovation projects, involving academic publication and application for external funding.

We are seeking a Healthcare Scientist at Band 6 to work in our Clinical Bioinformatics and Computing service. The service provides clinical information systems, analysis of large national and local data sets for outcome assessment and service improvement, prospective data collection including provision and analysis of registers, and assessment of real-world evidence in support of national guidance programmes.
The role will focus on collecting, processing, interpreting and presenting clinical data to support research and evidence-based clinical guidance, and to identify trends, opportunities and gaps in data-driven clinical knowledge. The candidate will lead on individual projects and participate in the development and upkeep of the service's data assets, infrastructure, codebase, documentation and training offering.
The successful candidate will have a range of skills in data science, statistics, and/or healthcare informatics. Proficiency with one or more programming languages (e.g. R, Python, SQL) is expected, as well as a track record in data analytics. Further experience with software development and databases (e.g. PHP, C++, SQL) and with development best practices is desirable.
The candidate will support the scientific, evidence-based approach to the Directorate’s activities and evidence of previous involvement of research projects is desirable. Direct interaction with stakeholders including senior clinicians and external partners will be expected as part of the role.

Essential criteria
- First or second-class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject
- Working towards becoming a registered Clinical Scientist
- Literacy, numeracy and accuracy of a high order

- Masters level qualification
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Specialist knowledge and skills relevant to the area of work to post graduate level
- Good knowledge of IT software packages (e.g. R, Python, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and knowledge of applying them
- Knowledge of legislation, standards and safety principles relating to area of work
- Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology relevant to area of work
- Basic knowledge of clinical hazards and infection control
Desirable criteria
- Experience in working in the hospital environment
- Experience in preparation and publishing of research in peer-reviewed journals
- General knowledge of the research and development process, including the production of grant funding proposals and ethics applications
