Job overview
As 2022 HFMA large team of the year, The Newcastle Hospitals Research Finance Team offers a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the future of healthcare. The team forms part of the wider Finance Directorate, with a specific focus on supporting research across the Trust and North East and North Cumbria (NENC). As a Finance Manager you will form part of this award-winning team, contributing your skills and experience to provide financial oversight for the NIHR in Newcastle. You will support research applications, commercial contracting, collaborative contracting and financial management of key awards including oversight of the NENC Regional Research Delivery Network (RRDN).
This is a key role within the Team; working alongside a second finance manager and the wider team you will contribute to the delivery of the Trust and RRDN Research Strategy by delivering an excellent finance function. You will manage a small team, covering costing of contracts, bids and allocations, month end closedown and process, reporting both internally and externally to NIHR, quarterly and annually.
You will have a key role in the development and maintenance of the Trust’s Research Costing and applications process to ensure Trust Costs are appropriately covered and financial risk is minimised.
- Deputise for the Assistant Director of Finance and Clinical Board Finance Manager in areas relating to Research Costing.
- Provide professional finance support for Research applications.
- To develop and maintain a costing model/process to be used during Research applications to ensure that Trust costs are appropriately covered.
- To be the key point of contact for provision of costing information and funding advice to the Newcastle Joint Research Office and to Research Project Leads during the application process and award stage.
- Utlise your knowledge and skills to support the Assistant Director of Finance and Clinical Board Finance Manager with key pieces of work such as business cases.
- Work Flexibly with the Finance Manager (post award) to ensure a robust financial management function is maintained.
- To liaise with Research Clinical Director, Deputy Medical Directors, Trust Executive Directors, consultant / senior clinicians, Newcastle Joint Research Office, Trust Research Finance team, Research Leads, and other Research staff as appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Excellent inter personal skills are essential as the postholder must have the ability to communicate complex financial issues. A logical and analytical approach to problem solving, having strong management and planning skills to co-ordinate the workload of a large finance function and the ability to work to tight timetables and under pressure.
- To deputise for the relevant Assistant Finance Director
- To ensure the provision of professional finance support for Research applications
- To lead the costing model/process for the Trust to be used during Research applications to ensure that all Trust costs are appropriately recovered
- To develop financial awareness in Research Teams and Principal Investigators of NHS research costing requirements
- To identify the financial risk to the Trust of Research award applications/proposals and develop/identify mitigating actions
- To advise on method of funding for excess treatment costs of Research studies
- To lead on systems/process development and improvement in relation to Research, in particular the application and approval processes
- To provide key input into the development of Research financial reporting, with the aim of improving the quality and efficiency of financial information provided
- To provide key input into the Trusts Research capacity and capability confirmation process
- To ensure costing information and appropriate analysis is available to support research related business planning and development
- To provide financial information for inclusion within Newcastle University collaboration agreements
- To ensure the provision of a high-quality financial management service for the Clinical Research Network, North East and North Cumbria (CRN:NENC). Provision of timely and accurate information to facilitate effective monitoring and management of the network financial position and to support the decision-making process

Essential criteria
- In depth specialist and practical knowledge of the NHS Foundation Trust finance regime, including corporate governance
- A good understanding of the NHS Research funding systems/costing models and NHS Research Strategy and governance framework
- Significant experience in the finance department of a complex organisation
- Demonstrable experience in a financial management environment, including ability to provide detailed guidance and advice to finance and non-finance managers
Desirable criteria
- Previous NHS finance experience at a senior level
- Microsoft Office skills
- An in depth understanding of NHS Research Funding streams and the role of NIHR (National Institute for Health Research)
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- Staff Management/supervisory experience and the ability to plan and organise a range of complex activities and programmes to meet deadlines
- Ability to communicate highly complex, sensitive or contentious information to a range of audiences using a range of different communication methods
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop good working relationships with Clinicians, Senior Managers and other Health Professionals both within the Trust and external organisations relating to Research

- Computer literate with a good working knowledge of financial systems
