Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

Teaching and Training Commitments: GSTT is both an undergraduate and a postgraduate teaching centre and Clinical Fellows are expected to take an active role in the postgraduate teaching activities. Clinical Fellows should attend ward rounds as required and these rounds should be considered a teaching opportunity for more junior staff. In addition they may be required to undertake informal teaching of medical students, nurses and other paramedical staff.
Teaching: The post-holder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Clinical Governance: All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.
Mutual Obligation to Monitor Hours: There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements.

It is intended that the post holder will contribute to the comprehensive non-invasive cardiology service at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS trust working with multidisciplinary colleagues within the cardiology team.

The post-holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team which includes cardiologists, geneticists, ICC specialist nurses, genetic counsellors and clinical scientists.
The post-holder will take part in relevant outpatient clinics with appropriate consultant supervision and support. The post-holder will provide supervised inpatient care for ICC patients including those undergoing invasive procedures such as myectomy.
The post-holder will contribute to Ajmaline provocation lists and will work with the MDT coordinator to prepare for and present at the weekly ICC multidisciplinary meetings.
Imaging sessions can be arranged and these will be tailored through liaison with the clinical lead. These could include any appropriate imaging modality (transthoracic, stress and transoesophageal echocardiography, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging).
The post-holder will be expected to contribute to development of an audit or research project.
Beyond advanced training in Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICC) there will be additional responsibilities in assisting in the provision of inpatient and outpatient care for our cardiology patients.
Other roles may be required or developed as appropriate to the post-holder and clinical service. This is envisaged as an excellent opportunity to gain experience that will assist in a subsequent application for a consultant post in cardiology with special interest in inherited cardiac conditions.
