Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. The Dental Directorate is seeking an experienced dental nurse who is keen to take on the role of Practice Development Nurse within the Dental Nursing Academy. Applicants must hold a recognised Dental Nurse qualification and be registered with the GDC and have experience teaching students.
You must hold the Level 5 Diploma in Education or equivalent or higher and have a Masters in education.
The role is a full-time permanent post working 5 days (37.5 hours a week). You should have advanced clinical knowledge in relation to teaching within dentistry. Experience of training in the principles of dental nursing skills with demonstrable leadership skills.
Part of this role will include collaborating with LSBU on the dental nursing degree, as well as supporting the dental nursing apprenticeship.
The position holder should be able to demonstrate excellent presentation skills, with communication and teaching skills.
Experience of organising timetables, lesson planning and learning outcomes in teaching dentistry related subjects in a classroom environment. You must be able to provide feedback and evaluation to staff and students.

- To identify training and development needs of staff within the area in accordance with local and national policies.
- Support staff in the provision of regular local and relevant teaching and training sessions including provision of ‘buddied’ clinical time to facilitate on the job learning.
- To be a source of highly specialist clinical and educational knowledge and to provide clinical supervision
- Assist in the provision of training programmes for dental nurses to expand their clinical skills e.g. restorative, oral health, cannulation, phlebotomy, which are acceptable to and certifiable by the Trust.
- Responsible for the development and co-ordination of training programmes for staff in conjunction with Training and Development department. The post holder will also be required to deliver training as required
- Works with Dental Sister/Charge Nurse to contribute to standard setting for dental nursing practice
- To work closely with other lead nurses, link tutors and dental sisters to ensure that placements are well supported and understand how to deal with poor student/staff performance.
- Participates in the selection, interviewing and recruitment of staff and in staff retention by promoting professional and personal growth of Staff.
- Lead the Dental Academy team and build successful links between key professionals to support and promote effective multi-disciplinary team working.
