Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Job overview
This is a fixed term 8 PA post for 1 year for a Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) to cover a consultant on sabbatical from the end of January 2025. The postholder will work collaboratively with the integrated sexual and reproductive health team high quality specialist (level 3) sexual health service and support and training for staff within the department and the organisation as well as with training of the GUM specialty trainees.
We have strong links with Lambeth and North Southwark primary care for whom we are the lead providers. The department works in close collaboration with women’s health services, Urology, Dermatology, infection services, emergency department and inpatient services.
The service is going through an organisational restructure to increase accessibility for LARC, HIV PrEP, STI prevention and care.

This is a part-time (8 programmed activities/0.8 Whole time equivalent) 1-year fixed term locum post for a Consultant in Sexual Health & HIV (Genitourinary Medicine) to provide complex sexual health care, leadership within the sexual and reproductive health department, training, as well as general clinical and managerial responsibilities in the department.
The post holder will contribute to clinical, teaching, audit and research support for the department and management support for the medical staff and the department in general. The service currently operates a senior doctor model where the named senior doctor provides oversight and support for the service as well as managing referrals and hospital/primary care queries.
The post holder will provide leadership for the PrEP service and the GUM Urology MDT.
They will provide a GUM Consultant referral clinic, a Genital dermatology clinic and a HIV outpatient clinic every week.
Working for our organisation
The Sexual and Reproductive Health department at Guy’s and St Thomas’ (GSTT) incorporates three integrated clinics. We provide a full range of sexual and reproductive health services based at Burrell Street, Walworth Road, and Minnie Kidd House, covering a diverse client group across Southwark and Lambeth. We run a walk-in service across five days at Walworth Road and Minnie Kidd House, and a seven-day service at our Burrell Street location.
It is a busy department seeing 66000 patient attendances annually.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical:
The post holder will, together with consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of Sexual and Reproductive healthcare services to the Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to include:
- Complex sexual health services
- Specialist Genitourinary medicine clinics
- Consultant referral and review clinic
- Genital dermatology clinic
- Urology MDT (Genitourinary medicine lead)
- PrEP MDT
- Advice and guidance for Sexual health:
- Other hospital departments
- Primary care
- Lambeth GPs
- North Southwark GPs
- South East London community pharmacies
- E-referral services
Provide High Quality Care to Patients
- The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration and hold a licence to practice
- To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
- To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
- To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
Research, Teaching and Training
- Where possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s research and academic training portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.
- To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Lead.
- To act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Lead to ensure external accreditation of training post.
Performance Management
- To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:
- Clinical efficiency e.g. optimising clinic capacity with demand and reducing DNA rates.
- Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing rebook rates.
- Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g. managing locum agency spend, ensuring clinical teams code activity accurately so tariffs are not missed
- Operational efficiency e.g. waiting list activity and demand management.
Medical Staff Management
- To work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors’ hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal.
- To ensure that adequate systems and procedures are in place to control and monitor leave for junior medical staff and to ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas,
- To participate in the recruitment of junior medical staff as and when required.
- To participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.
- To be responsible for the annual appraisal of all doctors in training, Trust doctors, Clinical Fellows and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Lead/General Manager
Strategy and Business Planning
- To participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and Trust where appropriate.
- To represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Clinical Lead.
Leadership and Team Working
- To demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national or local initiatives.
- To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Kings Health Partners as required.
- To chair regular meetings for the specialties.
- To resolve conflict and difficult situations through negotiation and discussion, involving appropriate parties.
- Adhere to Trust/departmental guidelines on leave including reporting absence.
2. The indicative Job Plan
The job plan is anticipated to contain 8 Programmed Activities per week on average to be carried out on Guy’s & St Thomas’ sites and does not include on-call commitments. This is an outline programme and the post holder will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including personal and professional objectives with the clinical lead within 3 months of your start date.
The job plan will be negotiated between the consultant and their clinical lead at least annually. The initial job plan for this post is planned to be:

Clinical experience and skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence of broad-based training experience and competence in sexual health, contraception (including LARC) and HIV care equivalent to that required for a UK CCT
