Job overview
The department of Histopathology at King’s College Hospital has a new position available for a committed, hardworking and enthusiastic person in what will be a new method of service provision for the Department, Digital Pathology.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 GCSEs, including maths and English. Lab experiences is desirable but not essential. Other attributes, skills and experience that are beneficial include attention to detail, rigorous, communicative, willingness to learn, work well within a team but also self-driven.
The role will require learning to use and maintain the Philips UFS Digital Scanner, ultimately becoming a “super user” and then teaching others as required. The day to day duties include preparing glass slides for digital scanning and managing scanned images. Other duties that the candidate may be required to do consist of filing glass slides and tissue blocks, helping in the histology specimen reception, assisting in specimen dissection and general laboratory housekeeping.
The post holder also assists with the laboratory and medical teams. They will perform duties under the supervision of Senior Biomedical Scientists to aid in the technical processes to diagnose pathological disease in tissue.
You will have good written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, a willingness to learn and the ability to work on your own initiative or as part of a team.
The Department of Histopathology provides a comprehensive, fully UKAS accredited diagnostic services across South London and receives specialist referrals from all over the country. The department performs routine and various highly specialised diagnostic tests using modern equipment.
As an IBMS approved training provider, the department runs a well-structured training programme that is delivered by a highly experienced and dedicated departmental training officer who is supported by a team of senior BMS staff. Team members receive personalised training programme and are encouraged to actively work on their personal and professional development including support for HCPC registration as well as specialist portfolios and MSc programmes. Among other things, the training programme comprises individual training manuals, competency assessments, registration and specialist portfolios as well as reflective learning and CPD lectures.

The main duties of the role includes preparing slides for scanning and managing scanned images using Philips IMS platform (see job description). After receiving the necessary training and support from the senior team, the post holder is expected to plan and organise own work and follow the principles and broad occupational policies or regulations, adhering to standard operating procedures and local rules within Histopathology.
The post holder is expected to maintain professional competency and dexterity in those precision based specialist and physical tasks, and maintain the levels of concentration required to maintain quality service.
The post holder is expected to participate in day to day technical diagnostic activities within the department.

The Department of Histopathology at King’s College Hospital currently processes over 28,000 surgical specimens per year, offering an impressive range of diagnostic techniques including routine histopathological methods, immunocytochemistry, immunofluorescence, molecular pathology and a Mohs Micrographic Surgery service.
The service is delivered by a dynamic team of 40 Biomedical Scientists and support staff spread across the Core Laboratory, Advanced Diagnostics section and the office. We hold IBMS training laboratory approval and participate in multiple external quality assurance schemes and demonstrate a strong commitment to continual quality improvement.

Duties and Responsibilities
Organisational and Administrative
1. To work under the supervision and be able to follow protocols and guidance in the day-to-day scanning of stained slides using the Philips UFS scanner
2. To retrieve archived slides and ensure in fit state for scanning purposes (i.e. readable barcode)
3. To re-file slides once scanned
4. To give and seek scientific and sensitive information as part of the scientific and communication process of service provision
5. To attend departmental meetings as required
Scientific and Technical
- To undertake the scanning of departmental slides
2. To perform all tasks related to digital pathology duties under BMS supervision in workstations within Histopathology
3. To assist in the planning and organisation of workflow
4. To maintain competency and dexterity in specialist/physical tasks and maintain delivery of a quality service
5. To ensure the safe use of the scanner equipment and maintain Philips scanner and monitor its use and performance
6. To report errors and problems immediately to relevant section leads
7. To undertake specimen reception duties by receiving and booking in external and internal requests on Winpath.
8. To undertake other general duties including telephone enquiries, photocopying, etc.
9. To assist in clerical duties and test data entry
10. To file and monitor the storage of blocks and slides.
11. To assist with consumable and chemical stock control, including receipt of goods and restocking of working areas. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list and the post holder will take on other duties commensurate to the job role.
12. To ensure referral slides are returned to the sender
