Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

Job overview
We are very excited to announce that we are recruiting to the position of Principal Maxillofacial Prosthetist/Reconstructive Scientist at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT). We are a busy unit situated in the centre of London next to London Bridge train station and The Shard and a short walk from the River Thames and Borough Market.

We are looking for applicants that can provide a wide range of highly-specialist maxillofacial prosthetic devices and 3D planning for a diverse range of patients and must be competent in all areas of maxillofacial prosthetics. The successful applicant must be able manage their own caseload and work autonomously to provide a high level of service to our patients and service users. They will participate in patient clinics, design and manufacture highly complex specialised maxillofacial prosthetics devices and attend multi-disciplinary team meetings when required.
Under the guidance of the Consultant Maxillofacial Prosthetist they will facilitate teaching and be responsible for providing training to STP students within the department.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual that enjoys working as part of a team, has excellent communication skills and can successfully manage a changing workload.
Working for our organisation
The successful applicant will be part of a team of four maxillofacial prosthetists/reconstructive scientists and three orthodontic technical members of staff. We are a dedicated team, that take pride in the work we do and are continuously looking at ways to improve and develop the service that we provide to our patients. We have active links into research both within GSTT and King's College London and promote sharing our skills and knowledge by teaching students within the department, presenting at conferences and publishing academic papers.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We are looking forward to welcoming a new member to the team and the successful applicant will work closely with all members of the maxillofacial prosthetics/reconstructive scientist and orthodontic technical team as well as surgeons, consultants, clinicians, nurses and administrative staff within Dental and the wider Trust.
Applicants will work in direct contact with patients providing a range of highly complex custom-made prostheses including ocular prostheses, facial and body prostheses, keloid pressure splints and nasal obturators. The role also includes undertaking complex orthognathic surgical planning, 3D surgical planning, attending MDT's and assisting with development of the service as required.
The interview will comprise of a practical assessment in the morning followed by a formal interview and presentation in the afternoon.

- MSc in Maxillofacial Prosthetics/Reconstructive Science or equivalent qualification and experience
- Registered with the GDC as a dental technician
Desirable criteria
- Vocational training post qualification at an accredited unit
- Full member of the IMPT and/or Academy of Health
Previous Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive knowledge and experience of producing highly specialised maxillofacial prosthetic devices. Construction of all types of complex maxillofacial devices, trauma, facial and body prosthetics including highly specialist implant retained devices.
- Significant patient management experience, including clinical and technical skills and an ability to relate to patients giving an excellent standard of patient care
- Experience of highly complex orthognathic surgical planning
- Experience of constructing highly complex dental appliances
- Experience of model scanning software – for example 3Shape
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of working in a hospital Laboratory
- Management experience
- Experience teaching at MSc level
