Expressions of interest are sought for the role of fixed term Technical Lead (Band 8a) in the NHS Neuroimmunology & CSF Laboratory based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (UCLH). The laboratory is a national reference centre and has an international reputation for the analysis of Neuroimmunology, neurodegenerative and cerebrospinal fluid diagnostic tests. The laboratory provides acute Neurological Laboratory services to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (UCLH) and the London region, plus specialised diagnostic and monitoring laboratory services to the UK and beyond. The post holder will be a member of the management team, assisting the Laboratory Director, Deputy Laboratory Director and Clinical Lead and an important member of the Quality team.

We are looking for a highly motivated, friendly and enthusiastic HCPC registered healthcare scientist (clinical scientist or BMS) who will fulfil the following criteria and skills:
• To act as technical lead for the NICL ensuring the efficient and effective use of the resources including finance, staff, equipment, environment and space.
• To have overall responsibility for health and safety within for the department.
• To act, when required, as a laboratory lead for NICL in cross-pathology IT.
• To be technically responsible for and participate in, all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the supra-regional assay service for the provision of specialist assays for the investigation of neurodegenerative and neuroimmunology disorders.
• To develop the service to maintain its status as a national and international centre.
• To deliver a range of scientific work demanding skilled performance working with a considerable degree of autonomy within the overall responsibility of the NICL director.
• Provide technical advice daily to internal and external users of the specialist service.
• Maintain an area of specialist interest and contribute to research and development in this and other areas of the department.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- First Degree in biomedical, biological, biochemistry or chemistry or equivalent experience
- Masters degree or assessed equivalent of knowledge and expertise in speciality of Clinical Biochemistry, neurology or Immunology
- Demonstration of Continuing Professional Development.
- Registration as a Healthcare Scientist with Health & care Professions Council (HCPC) (clinical scientist or Biomedical scientist).
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience in clinical neurodegenerative and neuroimmunology lab, clinical immunology or biochemistry.
- To have developed an expertise in one or more specialised analytical or clinical areas.
- To have experience in protein analysis or antibody techniques
- To have undertaken Research, Development and Audit activities.
- To have an extensive knowledge of routine and specialised analytical methods, quality assurance and problem solving.
- Able to perform risk assessments on a variety of laboratory situations. Fully conversant with COSHH regulations and their application to laboratories.
- To have a good knowledge of managerial processes within the Trust and NHS.
- Good awareness of trust policies and procedures and how they relate to the staff and service of the department.
