Job overview
UKHSA’s Radiation, Chemical, Climate and Environmental Hazards Directorate is seeking to appoint the Department Head for Radiation Hazards & Emergencies Department within its Radiation Protection Sciences Division. The position requires leadership and management of the relevant department consisting of 40 - 50 staff and a budget of around £2.5M. There is an expectation that the post holder will contribute to radiation emergency response and exercises in a senior role.
Appointment on a job share basis will be considered.

The post holder will provide leadership and direction for the delivery and development of the radiation protection services provided by the Radiation Hazards & Emergencies Department.
The duties will include:
- Business planning, budget, and staff management for the Department

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will provide leadership for the Radiation Hazards & Emergencies Department which comprises three Groups – Radiochemistry, Internal Dosimetry and Radiation Emergency Response. These Groups are distributed over two UKHSA sites, Chilton, Oxfordshire and Glasgow. They will be responsible to RCCE Directorate for ensuring RCCE maintains and optimises its capability to support UKHSA’s Category 1 responder functions for radiation emergencies.
Also responsible for maintaining and developing research programmes and outputs/publications in the areas of environmental radioactive contamination, internal dosimetry, and preparedness for radiation/nuclear emergencies; as well as maintaining RCCE’s national and international reputation in these areas. Departmental management duties also include corporate governance, health and safety, quality control, the recruitment and career development of staff. The post holder will act as a national representative or an expert witness, to advise parliamentary committees/groups and to support the work of UKHSA at high level in security-related meetings.
In emergency situations and related exercises, the post holder will undertake a senior strategic role within RCCE’s emergency response plan; this will involve close liaison with UKHSA colleagues, government bodies and the NHS. This includes the ability to provide specialist advice to clinicians and healthcare professionals on radiation issues as appropriate during an emergency situation or other situations of unplanned radiation-exposures.
Selection Process Details
This vacancy will be assessed using a competency-based framework which will assess your qualifications, knowledge and experience and / or skills and abilities outlined in the essential criteria.
Stage 1: Application & Sift

Security Clearance Level Requirement
Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.
Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) as a minimum, however if based at one of our scientific campus sites, you will be required to have a minimum of a Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) security vetting. Successful candidates must also have a willingness to work towards Developed Vetting (DV) clearance.
For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years for Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance, and 10 years for Developed Vetting (DV) clearance. For posts on UKHSA Civil Service terms and conditions, new entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band. For existing Civil Servants and roles advertised across government, the rules of transfer apply, i.e., level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive a 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
The Civil Service pay structure and progression is different from NHS Agenda for Change (AfC), most local authority pay grades and other systems that have annual pay increments. For further details, please refer to the Information Sheet- Starting Salaries & Benefits attachment.
For AfC or Medical/Dental posts, you must have the correct professional registration to be appointed. The pay will follow the AfC or Medical & Dental terms & conditions. Given the nature of the work of the UKHSA, as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act, you may be required in an emergency, if deemed a necessity, to redeploy to another role at short notice. You may also be required to work at any other location, within reasonable travelling distance of your permanent home address, in line with the provisions set out in your contract of employment.
