Job overview
Are you passionate about translational research and do you want to make a difference in global health? If so, this is the perfect opportunity to join the Pre-clinical Evaluation Team. The Pre-Clinical Evaluation team sits within the Vaccine Development and Evaluation Centre, investigating high consequence human pathogens. The research focus within the team is to test new treatments and vaccines and to develop new assays to advance the testing of vaccines.
You will be part of a team of scientists that work on assay development and in vivo modelling projects that contribute to the vaccine development pathway, from early-stage research through to provision of assays for vaccine licensure or post-licensure studies. As part of this team, you will directly contribute to UK vaccination policies and guidance as well as ensuring that vaccines and therapeutics are effective against pathogens before they progress to human clinical trials.
As a Scientist within the team, you will provide your expertise in virology/immunology to deliver on projects related to the assessment of vaccines against Influenza virus, and other viral infections in in vivo models. You will work on a diverse variety of projects with a range of collaborators across academia, industry, government, and non-governmental agencies.

- Utilize and contribute to the development of a range of laboratory methods/assays/techniques in support of all activities associated with the projects aimed to ensure project targets are met.
- Take responsibility for the provision of laboratory reagents and consumables required for the project and document storage of materials.
- Take responsibility for laboratory housekeeping and supervision of laboratory maintenance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This post would suit a candidate with experience in the relevant laboratory techniques, and a proven capability in critical thinking, problem solving and trouble shooting. They will have previous experience in preparing technical documentation such as standard operating procedures and protocols, and ideally have worked within a regulated environment (e.g. ISO 9001-2015, GMP). The post holder will be expected to be flexible and adaptable to the demands of the projects, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be able to collaborate with lab users from other teams.
Essential criteria -
You will be assessed on the below (7) essential criteria, which have been selected from the Job Description Document.
- BSc/MSc with several years’ experience in biological science/virology/immunology subject or a PhD.
- Good knowledge and practical familiarity with techniques for the project including standard microbiology, molecular biology, virology techniques, immunoassays, cell-based assays, cell culture and working at containment level 2/containment level 3.
- Good understanding and experience of safe working practices.
- Specialist training/experience in some of specific methods required for the post and their applications e.g., virus isolation & propagation, plaque assay, focus forming assay, RT-qPCR, virus neutralisation assays, ELISA, HAI.
- Demonstrable experience of having worked within a regulated environment (e.g., GCP, ISO9001) and undergoing audits.
- Clear communicator with excellent writing and presentation skills; capable of constructing and delivering clear ideas and concepts concisely and accurately for diverse audiences.
- Independent thinker with demonstrated good judgement, problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills.

This role is being offered as office/lab based at our Scientific Campus in Porton Down.
You will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. Security Clearance Level Requirement
Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.

For posts on UKHSA Civil Service terms and conditions, new entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band. For existing Civil Servants and roles advertised across government, the rules of transfer apply, i.e., level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive a 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
The Civil Service pay structure and progression is different from NHS Agenda for Change (AfC), most local authority pay grades and other systems that have annual pay increments. For further details, please refer to the Information Sheet- Starting Salaries & Benefits attachment.
For AfC or Medical/Dental posts, you must have the correct professional registration to be appointed. The pay will follow the AfC or Medical & Dental terms & conditions. For Temporary Appointments, if you are not currently a civil servant, you will take up the post on a Fixed Term appointment. You may be able to take this role up as a Secondment. If you are an existing UKHSA member of staff, you will take up the post as either a level transfer or a temporary promotion as per the UKHSA’s Pay policy.
Given the nature of the work of the UKHSA, as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act, you may be required in an emergency, if deemed a necessity, to redeploy to another role at short notice. You may also be required to work at any other location, within reasonable travelling distance of your permanent home address, in line with the provisions set out in your contract of employment.
