Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.
We have a reputation for clinical excellence and high quality teaching and research. We are part of King’s Health Partners, one of eight accredited UK academic health sciences centres. In partnership with King’s College London we have dedicated clinical research facilities including an MHRA accredited Phase I clinical trials unit.

This position will have the responsibility for the collection and processing of routine and research generated biomedical specimens in order to support research activity across various projects within the theme. Use analytical techniques appropriate to the particular research theme requirements. Screen and analyse results of tests carried out and report to academic team and colleagues. Maintain database of results for routine and research purposes. An important part of the role will be to liaise with clinicians and research groups within the Trust and KCL.

Applications are sought from a Biomedical Science background. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with an eye for detail, excellent communication and organisational skills.
A large part of the role will focus on processing samples and data entry so ability to extract data from medical records is key, as well as this being able to organise yourself, is a key parts of the role.
The post holder will ensure adherence to the Study protocol and departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Scientific and Technical
• To be responsible for the processing and organisation of clinical trial samples including: serum, urine and saliva.
• Review sample results and highlight out-of-range values to a member of the clinical team
• To ensure the Research Freezers are organised as per local policy and that they are regularly defrosted.
• Use and demonstrate to others the safe use of expensive and complex equipment.
• Ensure that reagents and samples are prepared, stored and used in an appropriate manner.
• To work in accordance with good working practices and local safety and quality initiatives.
• To assist and participate in departmental research projects under the direction of the QA Manager.
Information Technology
• To comply with national standards for the safe, secure and confidential processing and storage of patient and laboratory information.
• To comply with the departments procedural policies on accessing patient information on the computer data base.
• To ensure appropriate processing and storage of laboratory information relating to patient reports.
• Develop and maintain research results database.
Administrative
• To ensure compliance with good working practices.
• To ensure all sample records are adequately stored and accessible by members of the research teams.
• To assist research teams in the ordering and organisation of laboratory reagents, equipment and consumables.
General
• To adhere to local laboratory based and national health and safety policies
• To liaise with the research heads on all aspects of service provision and development.
• To liaise with all members of research staff regarding departmental issues, sample processing, tests required and their results.
• To maintain good working relations with other departments to promote effective teamwork.
• Be able to work autonomously within department operating procedures and protocols.
• Communicate with multidisciplinary team.
