An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 6-month secondment for the position of Retrieval Practitioner within the Adult Critical Care Emergency Support Service (ACCESS).
ACCESS is an adult critical care transfer service focused on safe, consistent and expert-led transfer of critically ill patients across the capital. We work with London Ambulance Service NHS Trust (LAS), the London integrated commissioning boards and associated critical care networks to provide a transfer service for critically ill patients throughout London 24 hours a day.
Transfer teams are currently operational within the four geographical sectors of London, operating under the oversight of Bart's Health, as the host trust. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work in any of the four geographical sectors, based on their individual requirements, objectives, and preferences. The ACCESS Team include one transfer doctor, one transfer practitioner, and two LAS crew, all led by two Duty Consultants who provide close support and expertise each day.
Joining the largest of its kind in England, you will be part of Pan-London Specialist Teams dedicated to providing highly specialised cardiac, trauma, neurosurgical, and burns care.

Joining the largest of its kind in England, you will be part of Pan-London Specialist Teams dedicated to providing highly specialised cardiac, trauma, neurosurgical, and burns care. Furthermore, you will actively contribute to the seamless repatriation of patients back to their respective local intensive care units across the country. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrate the required knowledge and skills to safely transfer patients from the Critical Care environment to the agreed destination
Adhere to all ACCESS policies and guidelines and be able to utilise them to meet care needs.
Adhere to National Guidance
Ensure swift response times aiming to meet the mobilisation standard.
Ensure completion of local and national data collection.
Checking of transport equipment to ensure everything is working and prompt mobilisation time is maintained.
Monitor resources ensuring consumables are adequately stocked
Contribute to the servicing and troubleshooting of all equipment, to maintain a safe working order.
Contribute to safe transport service delivery through feedback and surveillance
of FLAG’s, Datix’s and incidents
Maintain patient’s privacy and dignity at all times
To ensure dissemination of complex information through clear and effective channels of communication, between all members of the multidisciplinary team.
Be able to recognise own limitations and seek appropriate help.
To understand and practice effective team working
Demonstrate proficiency in the use of all equipment used in the care and
management of transferring critically unwell patients, be able to explain their use
Demonstrate proficient specialist skills and knowledge in clinical practice
Develop skills in accordance with the expanded role of Rotational Critical Care Transfer Practitioner
EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Act as a mentor working with observers and MDT staff in a way that is supportive and facilitates reflective learning towards effective practice.
Contribute to the teaching programmes associated with ACCESS
Contribute to development of the transfer service, through guidelines and audit.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain own professional development to ensure that all practice is based on current knowledge and relevant research.
Uphold the NMC/HCPC code of practice and be aware of the implications of the scope of practice.
Promote clinical supervision and reflective practice for self and members of the ACCESS team.
Be an ambassador for ACCESS when working in referring hospitals, meeting professionals in other organisations and when interacting with members of the public.
Promote effective inter-professional teamwork to optimise patient care, staff development and support.
