Job overview
We have opportunities for an enthusiastic anaesthetist to join our vibrant and growing department. This post has arisen due to expansion of services and replacement sessions for trust, university, and external roles that members of our team have taken on. They would suit anaesthetists who are looking to spend a year with us, either as a stepping stone to a substantive consultant role, to enhance their clinical expertise or to experience life in a Central London Teaching Hospital. We are known for our research and innovation but recognise that our success comes from a department which is supportive, cohesive, providing excellent standards of care, and where all members have an equal standing. Our Anaesthetic Department prides itself on being a friendly, cohesive and inclusive team supported by outstanding surgical and multidisciplinary staff.
Essential criteria:
• Full registration with the GMC, FRCA or equivalent; current General Medical Council (London), Specialist Registration in Anaesthesia or equivalent experience
• Applicants who are within six months of obtaining CCT may apply
• Start date within 6 months of interview date
University College London Hospital is a major teaching hospital. As a regional cancer centre and tertiary referral centre we have a challenging and complex workload. We have particular expertise in bariatrics, upper and lower GI, orthopaedics, urology, paediatric, head and neck, thoracic and endocrine surgery.
Advert
• To contribute alongside the consultant body to an excellent standard of care covering the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and management of patients requiring anaesthetic services as outlined on your job plan.
• Patient safety – to be actively involved in delivering high quality patient centred care and contributing to safety and quality initiatives and improvement projects being undertaken in the trust.
• Education – to supervise and support doctors in training. This will include delivery of teaching sessions and assisting the personal and professional development of our non-consultant staff. It will also include assessment and appraisal of trainees under your supervision with appropriate liaison with Clinical/College tutors when required.
• Quality Improvement and Audit – active participation in QI and audit projects, including initiation and supervision of projects related to your subspecialist interest. Participation in national audits is encouraged. All projects are approved by the Clinical Effectiveness and Audit Committee.
• Administration – to undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.
• Departmental Activities – to contribute and support departmental meetings.
• Cover – to provide cover for colleagues in their absence and deal with emergencies as the occasion demands.

Our labour ward delivers 7000 babies a year and has an interest in high-risk medical patients including GUCH. We have built a new hospital - Grafton Way, in addition to the current services, which has a proton beam therapy unit and an 8 theatre short stay surgical suite
Life outside work is also rich and rewarding. The hospitals are situated in a lively corner of central London, a short walk from the British Museum, Regent’s Park, Covent Garden, Oxford Street, and Kings Cross. Travel to the hospital is easy on public transport, or by bike, from all over London and the surrounding area.

- Full registration with the GMC
- On GMC Specialist Register for anaesthesia or within 6 months of attainment of CCT in anaesthesia at date of interview
- FRCA or equivalent anaesthetic experience
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Completed a recognised period of training leading to a CCT in anaesthesia or has gained equivalent experience
- Experience in anaesthesia for major surgical procedures including major laparoscopic surgery
- 6 months experience working in the NHS
- Experience of multidisciplinary pre-assessment and pre-operative preparation of complex patients
- Evidence of commitment to service improvement / clinical excellence
- Broad range of experience specifically in ‘outside areas’ including paediatric radiotherapy and nuclear medicine, CT, endoscopy
