Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

Job overview
Due to internal promotion a vacancy has been created within the Senior Nursing team in Cancer & Surgery. The postholder will hold the portfolio of Workforce, Finance and Digital on behalf of the Director of Nursing and will be expected to deliver successful performance across these three domains with the support of the wider nursing, operational and corporate team. The postholder will be joining a senior nursing team which fosters a culture of collaboration, facing challenges as a team while providing leadership to cancer services trustwide and seven highly diverse directorates and multiple clinical speciality teams. We are seeking candidates with significant senior operational experience, to be able to adapt to a leadership role across the full breadth of our services. The candidate will need to have the energy and flexibility to support unexpected operational challenges, the resilience to manage a high pressured environment and the ability to coach and support colleagues to find a way through challenges. The candidate will need an attention for detail which stands up to public scrutiny in financial decision making and be able to inspire teams to work differently to deliver the highest standards within our financial envelope. The Clinical Group is seeking a highly professional and flexible leader who will lead with positive energy and prioritise people at all times, to ensure we remain highly attractive for recruitment and successful in retention.

This post will work collaboratively across all disciplines the postholder will provide professional leadership to our nursing and wider MDT workforce with a focus on successful integration of our growing Therapies workforce, utilising the expertise they bring to patient pathways. Specific strategic priorities the postholder will be responsible for include the development of specialist nursing career pathways, enhancing the ward manager role, supporting emerging roles and to outreach into local community to attract people into the profession. They will be responsible for developing financial savings inititiaves across clinical environments, requiring difficult decision making and the ability to use data and risk management tools to justify decisions. This may involve leading teams into the emerging developments in digital healthcare. A keen interest in the benefits of AI and different ways to deliver care will be key to leading our teams towards the future. They will play an important role in the successful delivery of our key objectives including improved cancer performance & elective activity, reducing waiting times across pathways. The role will foster a culture of wellbeing through support and healthy challenge to our teams, enabling them to reach their full potential, utilising the full breadth of our diversity. The post-holder will represent the Clinical Group and Trust at cross-organisational meetings and deputise for the Clinical Group Director of Nursing.
