Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to work as an Assistant Psychologist in our Acute mental health wards based at Mill View Hospital, Brighton and Hove. This is new role that recognises the importance of psychological input to make inpatient admissions more therapeutic and to support timely discharges.
About the role:
We are seeking a confident and enthusiastic Assistant Psychologist with experience of working with adults with complex needs in a mental healthcare setting to support the acute psychology team and to enhance the psychological care of patients in the service.
You will work under the supervision of a qualified HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist to provide assessment and delivery of evidenced-based psychological interventions to individuals and groups. You will be an instrumental part of the ward team and will be involved in working closely with your interdisciplinary colleagues.
About the setting
Mill View hospital is a busy Mental Health hospital in Hove with with Adult acute wards, Older adult ward and Psychiatric Intensive Care. We strive to deliver care is that is personalised, and collaborative. We work with people with a range of complex mental health needs so our care needs to be autism and trauma informed, where people are engaged and occupied and given a sense of hope for their future.

You will need to be able to work within a busy team environment, where there is always high demand for Psychology. We are keen to improve access to psychological therapies and groups. We are looking for candidates who have prior experience of working within Adult Mental Health and we would like to hear from those who already have some experience of delivering psychological interventions on either a group or individual basis. Good audit and evaluation skills are essential, together with knowledge about the application of outcome measures and feedback tools and how they inform service change. We are also looking for someone who is well organised, able to prioritise in the event of competing demands, a good time-keeper, and able to work using their own initiative, but knows when to ask for help.
We are aware of the need for great diversity within the psychological professions and would welcome applications from people of the global majority, often referred to as ethnic minorities in the UK. We would also encourage applications from those with lived experience either as a service user or carer of some with mental health difficulties.
Working for our organisation
We will provide you with regular high-quality supervision from a qualified Psychologist/Psychological Therapist and the opportunity to develop skills relevant to applying for doctorate level training. We have excellent links with local training courses and a substantive inhouse CPD programme where you will have the opportunity to link in with other assistant psychologists working within the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· To support and enhance professional psychological practice within the service. Providing support, co-ordination and administration to clinical, training and research functions within the scope appropriate to level of training and competence, and to undertaking related tasks to enhance assessment, intervention and evaluation within the team or care group. · To work independently according to a plan agreed and reviewed through regular supervision by a HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist. • To undertake projects relating to service development and evaluation. • To set up databases, spreadsheets and using advanced IT skills in evaluation audit and research. • To support assessment and treatment interventions undertaken by the service as appropriate to level of competence and training. • To undertake direct and indirect clinical work as required under live or regular supervision from qualified applied HPC registered Psychologist. • To plan, organise and co-teach psycho-educational courses and groups with appropriately qualified professional staff. • To liaise with a range of services (including health, social care and voluntary agencies) relevant to the working area. |
