Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

Job overview
This is a developmental role over 4 years. You will work towards successful completion of a BSc (Hons) degree in Occupational Therapy and recognition by the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as an Allied Health Professional (AHP) Occupational Therapist. You will develop and maintain knowledge, skills and competencies related to the role of an Occupational Therapist through your apprenticeship within the service as well as through completion of the Occupational Therapy Apprenticeship training program. Whilst undertaking this training you will work within the service as an Occupational Therapy Apprentice, where your role will reflect your learning.
The Occupational Therapy Apprenticeship program combines and integrates academic and work-based learning through close collaboration between employers and education providers. As an Occupational Therapy Apprentice you will be based as an employee within Guy’s and St Thomas’ working in a specified clinical setting, as well as gaining further professional experience via practice placements. This will enable you to gain a wide appreciation of many health and care contexts, which will enable you to fulfil all the requirements of the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy program.
On successful completion of the program you will be equipped with the appropriate knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviour to ensure competence at the point of qualification. and professional registration with the HCPC

Main Duties of the Job.
- To provide care to patients within agreed competencies and training as delegated by the Occupational Therapist within set clinical protocols.
- To be actively involved in multi-disciplinary meetings that discuss patient progress and discharge.
- Assisting with additional non-clinical & administration duties required by the team.
- To attend University and clinical placements as set out in the degree programme.
- To complete and pass academic modules and clinical placements to the required standard in order to progress through the programme.
- As you gain experience, it is expected that the level of responsibility will increase during time on the degree programme to reflect evolving capability, with direction from a work based mentor & team lead.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To attend University and clinical placements as set out in the degree programme.
- To complete and pass academic modules and clinical placements to the required standard in order to progress through the programme.
- To ensure timely achievement in accordance with the academic programme requirements.
- To complete and pass the End Point Assessment
- To organise and manage a clinical caseload, mapped against evolving capability, which will include gaining knowledge and experience of providing occupational therapy care for patients with a variety of conditions (including long term conditions, neurological, acute medical or surgical conditions and paediatric conditions).
- To gain knowledge and skills (analytical and reasoning) to assess, diagnose, develop and implement individualised treatment programmes for patients with a wide variety of clinical needs encompassing both acute & long-term conditions
- To empower the patient and others to participate in the patients’ self-care and aim to enhance person-centred care.
