If you are a dedicated and hard working individual, with an interest in antenatal and newborn care, this may be the perfect role for you! You will work closely with specialist midwives, in ensuring that women and babies receive screening that they are eligible for. The post holder will be required to work cross-site at Royal Free Hospital and Barnet Hospital, Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm.
The post holder will have overall responsibility to provide efficient and effective administration of the 6 national antenatal and newborn screening programmes: Newborn Hearing screening, Newborn Bloodspot screening, Newborn Infant Physical Examination, Infectious diseases in pregnancy, Haemoglobinopathies and Fetal Anomaly. They will also maintain an accurate screening database and provide accurate statistical information.

The post holder must be able to demonstrate that they know how to use spreadsheets in excel, access databases and NHS medical records.

The Antenatal and Newborn screening and Fetal Medicine team is a cross-site service. The post holder will be required to work cross-site at Royal Free Hospital and Barnet Hospital; they will work closely with the members of this team which include specialist midwives, doctors and health care assistants.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- To develop and then maintain an active cross site database for the National Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) screening programmes including Newborn Bloodspot (NBBS), Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE), Infectious diseases in pregnancy, Haemoglobinopathies and Fetal Anomaly.
- Responsible for checking the quality of data entered onto the failsafe systems and filing systems, to ensure that all national standards are maintained and reportable.
- Responsible for organising plans to ensure that all investigations in relation to National Screening programmes are accounted for.
- Support the Screening coordinator, fetal medicine midwife and Infectious disease Midwife in maintaining reportable databases and the development of data analysis.
- To access the ANNB Fail-Safe (Northgate systems), to ensure that compliance with Examination of the new-born (NIPE), new-born hearing screening and Infectious diseases pathway is maintained and abnormal results are appropriately actioned.
- Ensure all patients who attend and access maternity antenatal screening services at all Royal Free London NHS Foundation trust sites are captured within the above databases. With patient’s information, examinations, results and appointments accurately recorded.
- To coordinate close interaction by the ANNB Screening Coordinators, ward, clinic and community midwives, paediatricians and Newborn Hearing Screening Team to ensure failsafe systems remain robust and ANNB services run smoothly.
- To assess the need to contact individual patients and coordinate completion of any outstanding ANNB screening services which may breach the failsafe requirements
- To liaise and correspond with the appropriate external service providers as well as GP’s / Referrers and patients regarding appointments, results and follow up care
- To be responsible for answering telephone enquiries and referring to other members of the Department as appropriate and when required contact and refer to other trusts / external providers.
- To respond expediently to abnormal results following investigative treatments, highlighting them in person to the ANNB Screening Coordinators to avoid delay.
- To provide detailed analysis to the cross site Screening Coordinators for the quarterly KPI’s and annual reporting as well as provide daily analysis of impended breaches on Failsafe Systems and to action these appropriately to meet service specifications.
- To assist the cross site Screening Coordinators to meet the national targets as defined by the NHS screening programme publication and alert the Screening Coordinators of impending breeches with identified remedial actions required.
- Attend MDT meetings with the ANNB Screening Coordinators regarding patients care and any external regional / national update meetings.
- Ensure that the fetal medicine midwife scans and emails the congenital anomalies referral forms to the regional centre for congenital anomalies.
- To present data analysis at various meetings as required such as Audit or Clinical Reviews using a variety of resources such as PowerPoint.
- To contribute to the development and completion of Outpatient surveys, in support of the Screening Coordinators.
- To aid in the investigation of ANNB screening incidents.
- To act as the main point of contact in relation to issues / updates for the Northgate for NBBS and NIPE systems
RESPONSIBILITY FOR PATIENTS - · To be confident and competent when dealing with distressed patients during telephone or face to face conversations and ensure resolution of individual concerns. To forward to respective counselling services if needed.
- Appropriately communicate sensitive information to women, families and midwives.
- Be able to deal with clients in emotionally difficult situations.
- Support midwives and obstetricians to work in partnership with women to develop plans of care which meet their individual needs, to listen to them and to advocating for woman as required.
- Take appropriate action when confronted by aggressive clients / relatives. To aid in the investigation of patient complaints
- Be able to maintain moderate physical effort for the duration of the period of duty to the clinical area.
- Ability to work under pressure and maintain good clinical judgement at all times.
- Appropriate use of resources to minimise risk from potentially harmful substances and to minimise risk of hospital acquired infection.
- Use of infection control measures when carrying out exposure prone procedures. Updating own vaccinations as necessary.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT
- The post holder will inform the Screening Co-ordinator and Clinical Screening Lead of any emerging safety issues within the maternity services at Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.
- Ensure a safe clinical environment for women; babies and families, taking into account the trust’s health & safety policies and directives.
- Ensure ANNB failsafe systems are continuously reviewed and developed to remain robust and reportable.
- Understand the risk management processes in the trust and service
- Demonstrate awareness and compliance with risk management policy and the appropriate escalation.
- Demonstrating clear lines of communication with colleagues, multidisciplinary team and key internal and external stakeholders.
- Participate in complaints procedures by supplying written statements, as requested in relation to adverse incident reporting
- Demonstrate responsibility in ensuring key recommendations from risk incidents are effectively implemented.
- Adapt and quickly respond to changes in service or departmental needs.
- To maintain confidentiality in relation to information about patients, staff and other health staff business in accordance with the Data Protection Act, Caldicott Guidelines and Freedom of Information Act.
- Be responsible for appropriate risk management in the delivery of maternity care. Initiate the risk management protocol in line with the unit policy as appropriate.
- Lead and take appropriate action in the event of a fire and/or Major Incident and ensure that junior staff are updated in these procedures.
- Undertake and participate in Clinical and Non-Clinical Audit as well as Quality Improvement initiatives.
- Assist the Screening coordinator, fetal medicine midwife and infectious disease midwife in reviewing and updating trust guidelines for ANNB screening services.
- Participate in assessing the service needs and deploying staff accordingly to ensure a safe level of care is provided. Take appropriate action when safety of care cannot be provided.
- Be aware of the Trust’s Vision statement and how this relates to own clinical area.
- Ensure that Trust’s behaviour standards are maintained.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR LEADING AND MANAGING
- Directly manage Health care assistant (Band 3) who is based in fetal medicine (for example Rota, Annual leave and yearly appraisal)
- Provide up to date and relevant local training on all ANNB screening failsafe systems to members of staff with appropriate access rights.
- Work with line managers to lead and implement change from National and Local Service Developments.
- Participate in the orientation and training of new members of staff ensuring ANNB screening E-learning modules are complete.
- To maintain active records of staff members and student’s access and completion of ANNB E-learning modules, ensuring their annual updates are completed and registered. Coordinate the completion of relevant e-learning modules.
- Act as a point of contact for new users to access failsafe systems
- To ensure good practice and professionalism is maintained at all times.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INFORMATION RESOURCES
- Responsible for accessing and maintaining multiple complex local and national ANNB screening failsafe systems and databases.
- Responsible for ensuring regular access to the external Northgate failsafe systems for NIPE and NBBS.
- Ensure all patient information is accurate and up to date.
- Receive complex IT data / patient information from the Maternity IT team which is required to be modified into appropriate ANNB screening databases.
- Responsible for supplying the screening coordinator with up to date complex COHORT data for the quarterly KPI and annual reports
- Responsible for ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act (1998).
- Provide statistical and financial information as required by ANNB screening teams.
- Computer literacy for inputting epidemiological data, accessing research articles, electronic pathology and blood results.
- Awareness of the Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information Act. Be competent in using the Trust’s electronic Maternity systems.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
- Be responsible for identifying own training and professional development needs and set a plan of action to achieve agreed objectives with Line Manager.
- Be responsible and accountable for your own statutory and mandatory training.
- Participate with relevant research and audit programmes.
- Participate in the implementation of change to local Policy / Guidelines in relation to recommendations from the National screening committee.
