The post holder has responsibility for part of the day-to-day working of the Clinical Embryology laboratory in the Department of Reproductive Medicine. The Department provides infertility treatment services to the North West Region of England, including In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), IntraCytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), insemination with donor sperm (DI), cryopreservation and vitrification of sperm, embryos and ovarian tissue, banking of semen prior to cancer treatment, provision of donated sperm, eggs and embryos. The Department also provides a national and international lead in clinical and research areas including tissue cryopreservation, research into human embryo development . The work of the Department is regulated and licenced by UK statutory bodies including the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).The post holder has a responsibility for patient care through the running of the clinical Embryology laboratory, which provides direct clinical treatment services to patients, including the creation of human embryos by IVF and their fate including storage or disposal. The postholder is expected to apply scientific knowledge, skill and expertise at the required professional level for the full range of clinical embryology procedures in the provision of a high quality service to patients.
Advert
• Perform the relevant laboratory duties according to the laboratory instructions which include oocyte retrieval and preparation for insemination, sperm preparation for IVF, IUI, ICSI, insemination, assessment of fertilisation and embryo development, embryo culture, embryo transfer, embryo cryopreservation/vitrification and thawing and Surgical Sperm Recovery (SSR).
• Provision of complex advice to medical and nursing staff which directly affects patient management, including semen quality, oocyte quality, embryo quality, formulation of Departmental policies.
• Responsible for decisions concerning eg; use of laboratory procedures for patient treatment and which embryos are suitable for patient treatment/cryopreservation/to be discarded.
• Weekend working on a rota is likely to be required to meet the seven day a week demands of the clinical service.
• The post holders will be responsible for staffing the on-call rota mandatory under the HFEA act.
• Responsibility for keeping records of patient treatment and performing data collection and analysis using computerised databases, for purposes of clinical audit, research and in accordance with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).
• Undertake document review, EQR’s, process validations and feed into the overall quality management of the IVF lab.

- Registration as a Clinical Scientist with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Full membership of the UK Association of Reproductive Clinical Scientists (ARCS), or the equivalent.

- Diplomate of the Royal College of Pathology or working towards it.
Qualifications

- BSc in Biological Sciences or related
- A relevant MSc or PhD.
- Possession of the grade Association of Clinical Embryology (ACE) training scheme certificate or NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) in cellular science or Part 1 examination for membership of Royal College of Pathologists, or its equivalent.
- Registration with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority as an ICSI practitioner.
