Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, with services covering the local authority areas of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. The Trust is part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care System (ICS) supporting a population of around 1.6 million people.
We have three main hospitals providing acute services to around 330,000 local residents. The organisation also provides specialist tertiary care for cardiac and haematology services, delivers community health services to over 445,000 residents including those in North Lancashire and hosts the National Artificial Eye Service across England. Plus, we provide urgent and emergency care services to an estimated 18 million people who visit the seaside resort each year. We employ over 7000 people from 68 different countries.

The successful applicant is expected to obtain high volume surgical and clinical experience from this post. At the same time the post holder will have dedicated research time that will allow carrying out and participating in high quality research, with the aim of peer-reviewed publications and national/international presentations. The Post holder will be supported for presenting their research findings (study leave, travel expenses).
The post is ideal for junior doctors aiming to improve their CV in preparation for application to training posts. The successful applicant will work under the direct supervision of Mr CP Charalambous both with regards to clinical work and research.
The Department has 10 Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons all of whom perform a variety of Elective and Trauma work. In addition to the advertised post, other grades include 3 Associate Specialists, 10 Staff Grades, 11 STs and 4 FY1’s.

“The junior doctor accepts that he will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation where practicable with his colleagues, both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the professions and the Department that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and in particular, that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis”.

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was established on 1st December 2007. The Trust gained Teaching Hospital status and became Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2010. In April 2012 the Trust merged with community health services from NHS Blackpool and NHS North Lancashire as part of the Transformation of Patient Pathways Programme. We are now a Vanguard site with Extensive Care Services provided for the complex elderly population within Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.
The Trust serves a population of approximately 440,000 residents across Blackpool, Fylde, Wyre, Lancashire and South Cumbria and the North of England. It comprises Blackpool Victoria Hospital which is a large busy acute hospital and two smaller community hospitals – Clifton Hospital and Fleetwood Hospital and the National Artificial Eye Service.
