Job overview
Sussex Partnership are pleased to offer a new Clinical Fellow role for post-foundation doctors. These split clinical and educational roles would be ideal for anyone wishing to step out of training, consolidate their skills and build new skills in teaching. Posts will be appropriate for those who have completed Foundation Training (F3) and those who have finished Core Training in Psychiatry (CT3+).
This fixed term post will be available from June 2025 to August 2026 (start dates in line with end of rotation possible i.e. August 2025 start date).
Postholders will be based at Langley Green Hospital, Crawley for clinical work and the Sussex Education Centre, Hove or online for educational work. Full clinical supervision will be in place from the senior medical team at the hospital and postholders will also be allocated an academic supervisor from the undergraduate department.

The main purpose of the post is to support senior leaders in SPFT Medical Education to deliver an exciting and inspiring undergraduate psychiatry teaching programme to year 3 and year 5 BSMS medical students.
Clinical duties will be in West Sussex inpatient services based at Langley Green. There will be a separate clinical supervisor for the clinical component of the job. Clinical duties are expected to be the following:
· Assessment of new patients including mental state and physical health examinations
· To work alongside the multidisciplinary team to plan and deliver safe and effective patient care
· To clearly document clinical encounters in a timely fashion using the carenotes system and processes in place.
· To ensure there is timely communication and liaison with other mental health services and General Practitioners regarding patient plans and changes to management
· To maintain a professional approach and collaborative working style with the multidisciplinary team
· To attend all appropriate team meetings
· To attend regular clinical supervision with the supervising consultant.
The educational aspects to the role are based at the Sussex Education Centre, Millview Hospital, Hove. However, much of the teaching is carried out remotely on Teams and home working could be negotiated. The educational expectations of the role will vary as the academic year progresses.

SPFT provides clinical teaching and training in Psychiatry for over 400 medical students per year from Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS). BSMS students undertake clinical placements in Psychiatry in year 3 and in year 5, enabling us to set strong clinical foundations in year 3 and then prepare our students for full clinical practice in year 5. BSMS also has strong Medical Education and Neuroscience departments that support and foster innovative research and modern teaching.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
REQUIREMENTS
In order to be a successful Clinical Fellow you will have:
· Basic Medical Training , MBBS or equivalent
· Full GMC/UK Registration
· Completion of Foundation Training
· Comfortable working in a fast-paced and varied role
· Experienced working within a mental health setting
· And an interest in Medical Education
This is a full-time post, working 37.5hrs Monday-Friday. We welcome applications from those seeking to work Less Than Full Time or job share.
Resources available to the post holder
The post-holder will be considered a full member of the multi-disciplinary team of the clinical area in which they are working and will be able to access the same resources as the core trainees in terms of clinical supervision, library facilities and IT equipment.
The Sussex Education Centre is an educational facility used to host lectures for up to 70 students, small group work, tutorials and simulation. A clinical supervisor and an academic supervisor will be identified for the post-holder prior to starting in role. Weekly clinical supervision will be mandatory and the post-holder will develop a personal development plan with these supervisors.
The post-holder will be expected to work closely with our undergraduate administrator and other non-medical members of the Medical Education team.
Responsibilities
a) Good Medical Care
The post-holder will be required to work within the clinical multi-disciplinary team to provide assessment, treatment and care to service-users and their carers. They will be expected to operate within guidelines, policies and procedures relevant to the post and will always be expected to work within their competencies. They will use their clinical supervisor and the wider clinical team of psychiatrists, mental health nurses, mental health pharmacists, psychologists, occupational therapists and administrators to support them in their work.
b) Maintaining Good Medical Practice
Meaningful participation in clinical and educational supervision is expected. Likewise, attendance at trust-wide postgraduate training is a requirement of the post. Full use of library and other trust educational facilities will be offered. Mandatory training and formal trust and locality induction will be organised for the trainee and full attendance is expected.
c) Management
The post-holder will answer to their clinical consultant supervisor with respect to their clinical work - the supervisor will vary depending on which team the post-holder is placed with. With respect to their medical education work, the post-holder will answer to Dr Lisa Page (BSMS Year 5 Lead) and Dr Alice Brooke (BSMS Year 3 Lead). Ms Maria McKenna and Mr Tomas Heasman will offer managerial oversight of the role. Ultimately, the post-holder will answer to Dr Oliver Dale, Chief Medical Officer for the trust.
d) Relationships with Others
The post-holder will work in partnership with service-users and carers in line with team practice. They will work constructively with managers and clinical colleagues to maintain effective team working.
The post-holder will be encouraged and enabled to make fruitful collaborations with local BSMS academic partners. Realistic and purposeful projects will be encouraged, especially those that use expertise from both SPFT and BSMS. Orientation to the local research landscape will be offered to the post-holder.
Study and Annual Leave.
The post holder will have access to SPFT training including our Faculty Development programme focused on developing our clinical teachers. The Undergraduate department will make available a £300 study leave budget for the post holder over the duration of the post.
Annual leave will be in line with standard NHS training contracts and will need to be negotiated in advance with both clinical and education teams.
