The Radiotherapy departments at NCCC provide a highly specialist clinical technical service in the treatment of cancer patients, receiving approximately 7800 new patient referrals per year.
Radiotherapy involves the use of ionising radiation in targeting tumours; the radiation is delivered to the patient using highly complex equipment including CT, MRI and Linear Accelerators. The radiotherapy departments in both Newcastle and Carlisle benefit from state-of-the-art equipment which includes 8 linear accelerators, 2 CT scanners, an MRI scanner and an SXT unit in Newcastle and 2 linear accelerators, a CT scanner and dedicated slots on a diagnostic MRI in Carlisle.
The Radiographers who operate the treatment machines and imaging equipment are educated to degree level and have a thorough understanding of the principles of oncology, radiation physics, radiation safety, radiobiology and care of the cancer patient. Patients may attend the department for a single episode of treatment or for a course of treatment lasting up to 6 weeks.
Typically, between 35 – 50 patients receive radiotherapy per day on a treatment machine. The team of Radiographers working on the machine take responsibility for management of the patient workload and assessing the patient’s condition on a daily basis. The service has responsibility to train BSc radiotherapy students in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Liverpool across both BSc and MSc programmes and including apprenticeships.
The Radiographers work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, along with Consultant Clinical Oncologists, Specialist Registrars, Physicist, Medical Technologist & Specialist Nurses in achieving a high standard of care for the patient.
The post holder will provide technical expertise and radiographer leadership for the radiotherapy service within their specialist area.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, highly skilled and motivated individual with extensive experience in the delivery of specialised radiotherapy services.
The Operational Lead Radiographer will be responsible for the operational management of radiotherapy services including treatment and imaging. They will manage staff, equipment, and other resources to ensure high quality, safe and efficient services are delivered to patients. They will be responsible for managing post-graduate training, education, continuing professional development (CPD) and induction of new staff.
They will support the Radiotherapy Service Manager in strategic planning and achieving the service vision and goals.
The successful candidate will possess a proven track record of achievement and be an inspirational leader who leads by example. They will be customer focused, flexible and able to influence staff at all levels.
Applicants should have a BSc in Radiotherapy or equivalent qualification supplemented by extensive postgraduate study and management or clinical experience to Masters level or equivalent.

- In collaboration with the Radiotherapy Service Manager (RSM) responsible for the management and delivery of radiotherapy services, i.e. treatment and imaging through the deployment of staff, equipment, budget and other physical resources ensuring a high quality, safe and efficient service to patients.
- Responsible for the management on a day to day basis the staff and patient activity within the department.
- To coordinate the Trust’s Health & Safety policy in radiotherapy.
- Responsible for managing post-graduate training, education, continuing professional development (CPD) and induction of new staff.
- Whilst acting on behalf of the RSM, and as a member of the multi-disciplinary management team, to take a lead as appropriate in strategic planning, service development, and resource management.
