Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

- Use technical equipment to safely draw blood from patients
- Explain the process of drawing blood clearly to a patient
- Reassure and calming patients who might be nervous or scared of the procedure
- Apply dressings to the wound created by drawing blood
- Register the blood and storing it in the correct environment
- Send blood samples to testing laboratories
- Maintain an organised and clean work area based on health and safety regulations and the guidelines of the Trust
- Answer patient questions regarding collection techniques and offering additional resources on the collection process, if the patient requests them

The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of a Phlebotomist
- Collecting Blood Samples
Safely and accurately draw blood from patients using venepuncture - Verifying Patient Identity
Confirm patient details (name, date of birth, NHS number, etc.) to ensure correct sample collection and labelling. - Preparing Patients
Explain procedures, provide reassurance, and ensure the patient is comfortable before drawing blood. - Labeling and Handling Specimens
Correctly label blood samples and ensure they are handled, stored, and transported according to protocol. - Maintaining Equipment and Supplies
Ensure all phlebotomy equipment (needles, vacutainers, tourniquets, etc.) is clean, sterile, and ready for use. - Infection Control and Safety Compliance
Follow infection control guidelines, wear appropriate PPE, and dispose of sharps and biohazard waste safely. - Data Entry and Record Keeping
Accurately record details of the sample collection, patient data, and time of draw in both paper and digital formats. - Working with Healthcare Teams
Communicate effectively with nurses, doctors, and lab technicians to ensure smooth workflow and accurate diagnostics. - Monitoring Patient Reactions
Observe patients for adverse reactions (e.g., fainting, bleeding) during and after the procedure and respond appropriately. - Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Stay updated with new techniques, safety protocols, and NHS or organisational policies related to phlebotomy.
