This post is for a junior surgeon or doctor who wishes to gain some experience of cardiothoracic surgery, prior to applying for core surgical training posts or ST3 in cardiothoracic surgery. The aim of this post would be to develop clinical skills as a doctor, in particular skills related to cardiology/cardiothoracic surgery; to obtain basic surgical skills; and improve the CV by building up experience in audit and research with the aim of applying for a training post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical:
· Day to day care of pre- and post-operative cardiac and thoracic surgery patients on the wards and in clinics
· Assist the advanced nurse practitioner team in the daily duties by covering 2 shifts a week on the ward
· Attend theatres and outpatient clinics on days not covering the ward
· 1st on-call for any HDU/ward emergencies
· Reviewing patients daily, requesting appropriate investigation and treating the patients based on EBM
· Seeks timely assistance from senior colleagues when appropriate
Administrative:
· Assist the ANP team with formulating discharge letters and TTOs
· Ensuring accurate and representative entries are made in the case notes following ward rounds/reviews
· Filling out appropriate referral forms whenever requested (e.g. for valve MDT)
Research/Audit:
· Participate actively in local audit and presentations; as well as attend the monthly M&M meetings
· Participate in any research activity and submit abstracts to meetings
Teaching:
· Attend the cardiothoracic weekly teaching and journal club
· Present at the weekly teaching
· Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff/medical and nursing students if appropriate
Flexibility:
In line with the Trust’s core value of placing patients at the heart of everything we do, we are developing our service provision to be responsive to the needs of our patients. To meet those needs some staff groups will be increasingly asked to work a more flexible work pattern so that they can offer services in the evening or weekend. As a result any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern or working in the future if required, including evening and weekend work.
