Job overview
Are you looking for a support role where you can directly make a difference to many patients and families. We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate who is keen to start a career working as part of our lower limb vascular team of podiatry and nursing staff.
This role is full time, based at the Freeman Hospital, and is a key role in supporting the team to manage patients with lower limb vascular disease. It is a dynamic role which will include a mixture of support for outpatient clinics and assisting the team when treating people who are in – patients on the vascular ward areas.
This is a very rewarding position as you will be contributing to the prevention of lower limb amputations and helping a considerable number of people to maintain their lower limb health and ultimately stay mobile.
There will be training from your colleagues regarding the use of equipment to assess foot health, and the multitude of ways this role can support wound care consultations.

The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills with a variety of colleagues and patients and must have a good basis of IT experience to liaise with colleagues across the northeast & North Cumbria region. You will also be required to work with software such as e- record and with Systmone which is the electronic patient record and booking system used by local podiatry departments.
You must have the ability to work with and without direct supervision, as part of a highly specialised team, and have a keen sense of responsibility to accomplish your duties. The candidate must show an aptitude for wound care and be prepared to remove and apply dressings to sometimes extensive foot wounds.
It is a very practical role, and hence candidates must be able to demonstrate manual dexterity, to manage podiatric instruments have the physical ability to provide care and assistance for many patients each day in busy environments.
The Podiatry Assistant would also be expected to assist with the maintenance of clinical equipment and to prepare or clean down clinical areas in line with infection control guidelines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This role will involve a combination of clinical support and an element of service organisation / administration such as patient record keeping, arranging follow up appointments, and general organisation tasks which can support the efficiency of the team. It will appeal to someone who likes to work with a wide range of colleagues and patients, likes a lot of variety in their work, and is looking for a new challenge, whilst doing a practical job.
- To provide basic foot care to patients of the Newcastle Hospitals Trust Podiatry Department under the direction of the Podiatrists and to support the delivery of Podiatry services in all its dimensions.
- To provide annual Diabetic and other foot appropriate foot screening assessments following the Newcastle Foot care pathway.
- To give assistance to the patients, podiatrists and wider Diabetes Centre, inpatient or vascular team, including Doctors, to allow the smooth and safe running of the department and clinical sessions.
- Working with a team of podiatry staff supporting the provision of foot and wound care at the Diabetes Centre, hospital outpatient clinics wards, community clinics and domiciliary settings.
