The Rheumatology Department is expanding, and these are new posts. The department provides a rheumatology service to the Newcastle population, and also a highly specialised service for inflammatory arthritis, spondylarthritis, connective tissue disease and vasculitis within the North East region.
The Nurse Practitioner will provide clinical care for patients with a wide range of rheumatology conditions, across the day-case unit, outpatient department and inpatient settings. To deliver a quality of service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice.
This can be a development opportunity, with a training pathway available for somebody new to the specialty or still requiring their clinical skills and prescribing qualifications. In this case, the successful candidate would be appointed as a Band 6 Trainee Nurse Practitioner and would be supported to undertake the relevant qualifications with a timescale between 18 – 24 months.

The post holder will work as a Rheumatology Trainee Nurse Practitioner, which will involve spending time on our Day Case Unit (DCU), inpatient ward, monitoring department, specialist clinics and general rheumatology clinics under the supervision of the consultant body and senior nursing team.
The post holder will be responsible for the clinical assessment and management of a cohort of patients with diagnosed rheumatology conditions, working closely alongside consultants and allied health professionals. This will involve reviewing and overseeing the care and treatment of patients on the day-case unit, undertaking independent rheumatology clinics in outpatient setting and some involvement in delivery of care in an inpatient setting.
As well as providing and supporting care on the day-case unit and undertaking rheumatology outpatient clinics, the post holder will also be involved in the delivery of the specialist advice line triage and clinics.

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to perform a specific technological procedure/s e.g. endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and/or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a broad patient group.
To work towards the role of an independent nurse practitioner, contributing towards the delivery of a quality service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice:
- To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care.
- Will provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritising importance and clinical need.
- Supports the clinical team to manage a defined caseload, activity to include assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined protocols and training.
- Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others.
- Review and refer to appropriate person, e.g. AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team.
- Liaises with Patient Services Coordinator.
- Communicate within multidisciplinary team, ward/departmental staff and/or out of hour’s team.
- Contributes to specialist education and training to ward departmental staff, nursing and medical students.
