Job overview
This is an opportunity for a specialist mental health pharmacist to join our team. This clinical role includes leading the education and training of our mental health pharmacy team, and leading the perinatal pharmacy services.
The postholder will be the lead clinical pharmacist for perinatal Mental Health, and for Education and Training, within the pharmacy team. This includes leading and developing the pharmacy service to these areas, , and leading any associated projects.
The postholder will deliver a comprehensive clinical pharmacy and medicines management service to patients under the care of Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust (GHC) and to the multidisciplinary teams (MDT) responsible for their care. This involves visiting inpatient wards and community team bases, and attending MDT meetings to proactively review, rationalise and optimise patients' medications.
The pharmacy department at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital provides the clinical pharmacy and dispensing services to Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust (GHC) under a Service Level Agreement.

The post holder will be the lead pharmacist for education and training of the mental health pharmacy team. This will involve development and implementation of a clear strategy for the development of all members of the team.
The post holder will also be the clinical lead pharmacist for perinatal services. This will involve delivering clinical pharmacy service to patients under the care of the perinatal team, working with the team, and developing the pharmacy provision to this service.
The post holder will support patients and their families by providing advice about the actions and use of medication, optimising treatment, providing information and liaising with acute and other care providers to ensure seamless transfer of care.
They will be a clinical specialist in this area and where appropriate, an independent prescribing role would be undertaken.
The post holder will contribute to good physical health wellbeing of patients by providing expert advice and performing interventions to improve physical health.
The post holder will deliver a comprehensive clinical pharmacy and medicines management service to patients under the care of GHC and to the multidisciplinary teams responsible for their care.
This post will require travel to wards and units across Gloucestershire.
Working for our organisation
The pharmacy department has approximately 240 staff. The 2 sites provide dispensary services to inpatients & outpatients, medicines information, procurement services and full clinical service to wards; the onsite aseptic and manufacturing services are centralised at CGH.
Within the department are specialist clinical teams; the Specialist Mental Health Pharmacy facilitates delivery of Specialist services for Mental Health & Learning Disabilities. The cancer services team provide a pharmacy service at both sites for oncology & haematology and satellite pharmacy.
We are a friendly, inclusive department who wish to nurture and develop our staff at all grades, from a mentoring programme for new pharmacists to the development of pharmacist prescribers.

The post is responsible to the Lead Pharmacist for Community Mental Health Teams, and involves managing some staff within the mental health pharmacy team.

Perinatal Services
Develop the governance and strategic aspects of the clinical pharmacy services to perinatal mental health services.
Develop the clinical pharmacy provision to the perinatal services.
Deliver an advanced clinical pharmacy service to perinatal service including regular participation in the MDTs.
Deliver direct patient care, undertake domiciliary visits, when appropriate.
Provision of specialist perinatal clinical advice to primary care prescribers.
Develop, implement and monitor medication related clinical policies and procedures for perinatal services.
To develop and undertake an independent prescribing role.
To initiate, collaborate in, analyse and report on multidisciplinary improvement projects and research involving the perinatal service.
Education and Training
Develop and lead a clear education and training strategy for the mental health pharmacy team and rotational members of staff. This covers all staff groups including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and assistant technical officers (ATOs).
Lead and coordinate delivery of this strategy to the team delegating duties as appropriate.
Oversee the design and review of the training programme for the rotational pharmacists coming in to mental health, ensuring that it is delivered as intended.
To act as a mentor for the mental health sections of the clinical pharmacy diploma and the specialist psychiatric pharmacy certificate/diploma to enrolled students.
Proactively support the learning of others about mental health pharmacy within the wider pharmacy team
Support the development, implementation and maintenance of education and training relating to medicines use for multidisciplinary clinical staff (e.g. nurses, doctors) working within GHC and GHFT.
Undertake the role of foundation pharmacist tutor as required.
To organise and co-ordinate the holiday work-experience for pharmacy degree undergraduates.
To push boundaries by creating initiatives regarding providing educational and support to patients and carers.
Identify own development needs, aligning these to service requirements and personal aspirations. Proactively develop and improve own practice and engage in supervision.
Undertake all mandatory training.
Clinical Pharmacy Services to Inpatient Wards and Community Mental Health Teams
Be responsible and accountable for providing a clinical pharmacy service to allocated inpatient wards and community teams:
Ensure that designated ward and team bases are visited by a pharmacist at agreed intervals.
Regularly attend and contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings.
Proactively review, rationalise and optimise patients’ medications.
Review all prescriptions regularly, ensuring adherence to legislation, national and local guidelines and formularies.
Advise on individual drug treatments, including possible adverse effects and interactions.
Undertake medicines reconciliation assurance in conjunction with the medicines management technicians.
Deal with and report medication incidents.
Work to improve patients’ concordance with medication.
Provide information to staff, patients and their representatives, including individual counselling on newly prescribed medicines and discharge counselling.
Produce comprehensive patient medication histories as needed.

- Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent skills gained through experience of hospital pharmacy
- Specialist Post Graduate certificate or diploma in psychiatric pharmacy, or equivalent
- Post graduate qualification in Non-Medical Prescribing (or willingness to work towards this qualification within an agreed timeframe)
