The mission of the division is to protect people from healthcare-associated and antimicrobial resistant infections, through world-leading public health microbiology, outbreak response, surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, modelling, research and interventions.
As Senior Scientific Information Manager you will be part of a dynamic national team responsible for delivering an effective health intelligence service supporting public health delivery.
Advert
- Maintain and develop data products and database tools in the team using SQL, R,git and/or other languages. Work with colleagues from across AMR & HCAI to produce innovative and reproducible data products
- Develop scalable, innovative approaches to extract, manage, and analyse epidemiological surveillance and outbreak data
- Develop, manage and maintain databases and data pipelines involving ingress and egress of data from disparate systems using data warehousing techniques
- Support the development and use of dashboards (eg PowerBI, R Shiny, SSRS) to facilitate the visualisation and dissemination of data to key stakeholders and the public
- Planning, managing and delivering on a range of projects requiring potentially complex analytic input, including negotiating and agreeing the most appropriate data output, initiating and planning workloads and setting delivery timescales
- Analyse and interpret complex data and undertake statistical analyses and exercise judgement in interpreting statistics appropriately, especially where the data indicates a negative or contentious situation
- Carrying out innovative analysis to determine the return on investment of preventive interventions and programmes.

You will be required to:
- Work to promote the use of data science and help develop the AMR & HCAI division by identifying and developing opportunities for further automation and reproducible analyses, developing new data products, and pipelines enabling the service to take advantages of technological advances in UKHSA like High Performance Computing.
- Work with others to identify opportunities and applying modern data analytical techniques including machine learning to the division and public health intelligence problems and issues.
- Advocate data science approaches and help develop data science capacity and capability in the division and wider local public health systems. This may include training, developing packages and tools.
- Undertake analyses, interpretation and presentation of public health data to provide health intelligence to meet the needs of local and national stakeholders.
- Lead the delivery of analytical and technical work on a wide range of public health priority topics driven by the needs of internal UKHSA colleagues and external stakeholders.
- Data analysis, pipeline development, data warehousing techniques, production of health indicators, quality assurance of health intelligence products, as well as the supporting the provision of training and translational support so that stakeholders can understand and act on health intelligence.
- You will work matrix style with colleagues across the country to develop and deliver national health intelligence outputs on a range of public health priority topics.

This role is being offered as hybrid working based at our Scientific Campus in Colindale. We offer great flexible working opportunities at UKHSA and operate using a hybrid working model where business needs allow. This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to get the best from our workforce. For posts on UKHSA Civil Service terms and conditions, new entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band. For existing Civil Servants and roles advertised across government, the rules of transfer apply, i.e., level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive a 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
The Civil Service pay structure and progression is different from NHS Agenda for Change (AfC), most local authority pay grades and other systems that have annual pay increments. For further details, please refer to the Information Sheet- Starting Salaries & Benefits attachment.
For AfC or Medical/Dental posts, you must have the correct professional registration to be appointed. The pay will follow the AfC or Medical & Dental terms & conditions. You may be asked to provide evidence of previous service whilst we are conducting pre-employment checks to determine your starting salary.
For Temporary Appointments, if you are not currently a civil servant, you will take up the post on a Fixed Term appointment. You may be able to take this role up as a Secondment. If you are an existing Civil Servant, based outside of the UKHSA, you will take up the post as a loan which you will need your department to agree. You cannot take the post up as a fixed term. If you are an existing UKHSA member of staff, you will take up the post as either a level transfer or a temporary promotion as per the UKHSA’s Pay policy.
Given the nature of the work of the UKHSA, as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act, you may be required in an emergency, if deemed a necessity, to redeploy to another role at short notice. You may also be required to work at any other location, within reasonable travelling distance of your permanent home address, in line with the provisions set out in your contract of employment.
