The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are seeking to expand our Urgent Care provision with the development of a co-located Urgent Treatment Centre at the RVI to complement our existing community Urgent Treatment Centre offer.
We are now in an exciting position to recruit a number of full and part time Emergency Care Practitioners who have extensive urgent care and/or primary care experience to our busy service who will work across all three sites (RVI, Molineux Street in Byker and Ponteland Road in Cowgate) providing care for acute minor illness and injuries in an unscheduled care environment.

The service is GP led, open 7 days a week with varying opening hours which will be location dependent with a 24 hour presence at the co-located RVI site. Whilst our Emergency Care Practitioners work independently delivering care to all presenting complaints to all age ranges, both adult and children. They will receive an initial supernumerary period of training followed by ongoing support from the wider team of experienced Emergency Care Practitioners and GP’s.
These Band 7 posts are open to Registered Nurses and Allied Health Professionals who can demonstrate their ability to work in an urgent, unscheduled care environment. You will need to have the ability to undertake assessment, diagnosis, treatment/referral and discharge of patients with minor illness and minor injuries. A qualification in clinical skills is essential and Non-Medical Prescribing and the ability to read and interpret X-Rays would be desirable.
Consideration for a Band 6 role will be given to applicants who are able demonstrate experience in urgent and/or primary care and a full training and development package will be provided, including access to the clinical skills courses. Dependant on experience, the successful candidate will progress to Band 7 upon completion of competencies with a maximum timescale of 2 years.

- The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse/AHP practitioner as a qualified nurse/AHP where the primary purpose of role is to perform a specific technological procedure/s e.g. endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and/or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a broad patient group e.g. H@N, pre assessment.
- To deliver a quality of service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing/AHP practice:
- To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care.
- Working as a nurse/AHP practitioner, provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritising importance and clinical need.
- Manage own caseload to include assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined parameters and training.
- Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others.
- Review and refer to appropriate person, e.g. AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team.
- Liaising with Patient Services Coordinator where necessary.
- Communicate within multidisciplinary team, ward/departmental staff and/or out of hours team.
- Provide specialist education and training to departmental nursing/AHP staff, nursing and medical students.
